Moving to Switzerland... good or bad choice? ? |
I have a passion with Switzerland and I would love to live there. My favorite city is zurich. I am from Greece and my occupation is musician. My qualifications are for music teaching however I can work in studio or with music technology as well. I have a few very specific questions?
1)What can I do as a musician there? I don't speak a word German and I wouldn't like to try to learn the language outside of Switzerland, as the dialect is really different. Can I work with bands or what do you think is possible to do? Set up a record label, or find a job in an English speaking school...
2)How is for a person from Greece to live in Switzerland? Would this bother the Swiss? I am not black and I think it's visible the difference between a Greek or a Spanish person from an East European so I hope I won't be a target for racism... but I just hope (I have my cousin who lives there without German but I need more opinions).
The reason I want to move there: Cleanness, I can't stand the litter , the overcrowded cities and dirty pavements. I like the organized countries. My opinion from a few Swiss people I cam across is not bad. They seemed to be more easy going than I thought before and well educated, however I always appreciate a second opinion. my ex bf is swiss, from Zurich, Schachafaussen.
people is polite, cold if you dont know them, is not easy enter in private circles if you dont have close relation with one. they are many foreign people there. i went in zurich long time.
many thailand women and so on. swiss men love foreign women specially coz are not good lovers and the way to catch women is the status they have, specially if the women come from poor countries.
Im not mean lol just tell you what I saw and even swiss people talk.
anyway if you go there, you will see it.
customs take off the shoes inside the house. you need to learn german to learn SWISS GERMAN, is what you heard in zurich (is the german part of Switzerland), swiss german is a dialect. is a bit difficult is some pronunciation sometimes and doesnt matter how much you learn , never you are going to sound like a swiss.
example of swiss german (you dont find a book to learn that, is a dialect)
thank you = danke (german) danka (swiss german)
is very clean and the archittecture is great, love it.
have a expensive style of life, is not sheap live there.
the food, well the traditional swiss food SUCKS!!!!
the only good thing will be the chocolate talking about food.
the swiss love italian food.
also have great wactch, knife and the swiss army is famous but just coz are kingd of army toy, "RICH GUY PLAYING WITH TOYS"
they never when in a real war but anyway they feel proud of their toys.
people is friendly. and if you want to know about what kind of people they DONT LIKE is people from YUGOSLAVIA, it seems they hate them, i heard loooot of swiss said bad stuff about them.(include my ex, his family and friends and so on people I met there) so I dont think is about the color coz actually people from yugoslavia is not black.
YOU NEED TO KNOW GERMAN AT LAST to live there. you wont find a job if you dont. anyway they have plan for foreign people. in public school you can go to class of german, they ofter this to integrate the % of people that is not swiss and live there. of course you have to be leagl. i dont know if you can just go there. need permission to work or not?
also they separate the trash you know to recycle so you have to be use to that. winter is very cold but the city ZURICH looks gorgeous at night. Xmas, they have little market, beautiful.
is a beautiful country. no so many things to do if you are very active person ( I mean is NOT new york city of miami).
rent is very expensive and become more expensive depends of the zone. YOU PAY TAX FOR EVERYTHING!!!!
and so on ...I could tell you a loooooot from there. |

I visited Lausanne and Geneve while I was there and I found that the people are very receptive to outsiders. They help a lot of refugees and are very polite to newcomers. I'm sure you'll be just fine! And Lausanne was my fav city by far! |

Just remember that Zurich can be very expensive so if your are wanting to live there a job is a must and it is always better to have one set up before leaving.

1) It will be extremely difficult for you to get a job here. To find a job in an English speaking school you have to be a native English speaker. I'm not sure if you can find bands to work with and if you can make a living with that- Switzerland is expensive and Zurich especially. You have to learn German- Swiss German (Merci not danka) is not necessary in the first time.
2) No. Many Swiss dislike people from former Yugoslavia or Turkey and there is in general a subliminal xenophobia, unfortunately. But they have no special problems with Greeks.
Good luck! |

Moving to Switzerland... good or bad choice?
VERY GOOD CHOICE!
Switzerland is very open. The people there are so nice, they would love to have you! I think it is rather hard to become a citizen- but I am not really sure if that is what you are after or not. Living there would be amazing thoug... I hope you get what you want. |

Moving to Germany i lot easier for you because it is in the European Union, a lot of Greeks live the for example Cologne, an you have just to learn Plain German not a German with a Dialect. |
