I have been to Switzerland twice and I absolutely love it there. I went in May last year and the weather was mostly perfect. It's a costly country (accommodation, food etc) but worth it for the scenery alone.
Travel by train is one of the easiest, most scenic and best ways to travel around. However, it can also be quite expensive in Switzerland and other parts of Europe, so a train pass (Eurail Pass etc) would be the best option, especially on longer journeys. You can buy passes that are good for 2 or 3 countries or more, for a specified number of days.
Or for fantastic Swiss train journeys, check out the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express, Golden Pass Line and the Chocolate train etc. I have sent some links to give you an idea of what they are like.
There are so many beautiful areas of Switzerland, it's difficult to recommend just a few. You will see lovely mountains and lakes and forests and medieval towns with their historical centres, cows with their bells ringing....
If arriving in Geneva, I suggest you travel towards Lugano via Vevey or Montreaux and see Chateau Chillon. Then you could stay up in Zermatt...and go up to see the Matterhorn.
If arriving in Zurich (which is my preferred option) I suggest you stay in the lovely city of Lucerne to explore the old part of town, and go up to see a mountain or two.
Austria is also very beautiful and I would highly recommend a stay in Salzburg and Vienna, but Salzburg is my absolute favourite. A trip up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress is a must. If in Salzburg for at least 2-3 days, then you should buy the 'Salzburg Card', which will give you free entry to many places.
I suggest you go out and get a good travel book. The 'Lonely Planet book of Switzerland' is excellent and I would highly recommend it for great ideas and information...and do as much research as you can on what you really want to see the most. (mountain tops, glaciers, ice caves, medieval cities, castles etc).
Anyway...Good luck and have lots of fun and take lots of photos. |

Grüezi means Hello in Swiss German!
I'd start your trip either in Geneva or Zürich (both have international Airport's)
GENEVA: see the city itself,go on thru the lovely little wineyards villages (great food with a french touch and don't miss the famous cheese Fondue or Raclette) up to Lausanne/ Montreux and visit "Chateau de Chillon"!
ZURICH: the famous "Bahnhofstrasse" (keep your Amexco tight, lol),old city called "Niederdorf" with lovely little shops and coffee-houses. Then make day trips to famous Luzern, the Rhine-Falls etc.
Could tell u much more but... Just enjoy! |

First of all you did not specify for how long? Lets assume you are going for 10 days? May can be a nice but a bit cool month. I would suggest you fly into Zurich stay 2 days get a train ticket (look here)http://www.magicswitzerland.com/train_travel.htm
and start traveling either first north-west to Basel then go down to Bern or better to Luzern which has much more to offer from there go to Interlaken and south to Brigg enjoy in each place the huge lovely Swiss Alps by going and stopping in Zermatt . I have no idea how many days are left but I suggest you take a train to Vevey or Lausanne (not much to see except the lovely Lac Leman (Lake of Geneva) and go back to Zurich. I strongly suggest you buy yourself a book about Switzerland or look into sites that give you information. See what seems most to attract you and have a great trip. I must stress Swiss hotel accommodations are expensive. |
