Pros and cons of Swiss Eurail pass? |
Hey Guys,
I'll be living in France (Grenoble) over the summer. As Grenoble is really close to Switzerland like 2-3 hours, I want to visit Switzerland over weekend(s). So I was thinking of getting a Swiss Eurail pass through www.raileurope.com. I have asked other people but they said it is cheaper to buy individual tickets. And some of the trips esp from Grenoble to Zurich was costing about $240 and the pass itself is costing about $300 for a 6 day trip for 1month. I can see that it is much cheaper to get a pass but is it advisable? I want to know others' experiences with Swiss rail passes. Are there any catches? Like no traveling on certain days (black out days), extra fees and such. I also want to know your experiences and your personal pros and cons of getting a swiss pass. Thanks for the info guys. |

If you mean the SwissPass, there are no blackout days. The only extra fees are reservation fees, which are required on some of the "special" trains, like the Glacier Express, or if you want to do something extra like check your luggage through, or obviously upgrade from second class to first. Also some of the postal buses in the mountains come with an extra fee. For all of these (except the class upgrade for longer distances), you're looking at about 10 francs each. The SwissPass is also valid on almost all city buses and trams, as well as boats and museums.
If you're talking about the France-Switzerland Eurrail pass, I'm not sure if it's valid on city buses.
Another thing to look into is the Half-price card. It's about 100 francs for a month or 150 for a year and then trains are half price. |
