Questions about Switzerland? |
Why doesn't Switzerland have its own language? Why are German, French, and Italian the three official languages?
Do people of all those languages live together or is each language designated to a certain part of the country?
Are movies in Switzerland typically made in German or are they also made in French and Italian? |

The offical language of Switzerland is German (Swissgerman). The other languages are French, Italian and Rumantch. They speak French in the west (where is the Franch), Italian in the south (where is Italy) and Rumantch in the canton GraubĂĽnden (where is Austria). But Rumantch isn't speaked of many person.
They don't live together. How you can see, these languages are speaked in the diverse regions.
There are movies made in Swissgerman. But they don't make them also in French and in Italian.
If you have other questions you can write me, because I live in Switzerland. I grew up in the German-part and now I live in the part where they speak Italian.
Bye, bye |

You got to go back in history, from 1291, and see the evolution of the country.
go look at Britanicca or Wikipedia, you will have the explanation. Too long to explain here.
Language is spoken on each region: German in the eastern part, French in the Western part and Italian in the Southeastern part.
Movies are made in the language of the "director". native tongue.
We are proud of this, since it is the ONLY country in the world which does not have inside conflict like sometime in Belgium betwwen the Flamish and Wallons. |

I think the questions you are asking are actually reasons to travel to Switzerland. It's a very interesting place. Each part is different, seperated by language, mountains, whatever. But they are very proud to be swiss. |

The swiss have somewhat of their own language, at least the swiss germans. They speak dialect and the dialect varies from area to area. French is spoken in western switzerland (Geneva, Fribourg, Vaud, Jura, Neauchatel and parts of Wallis and Bern) German is spoken about everywhere else exept southern switzerland where italian is the main lanuage (ticino). In eastern switzerland (Graubuenden) there is a 4th language (spoken by about 0.5%), raetoromanisch. |

The Swiss speak these three different languages regionally, though, without question, there is some overlap. The settlers of these regions brought with them parts of their own cultures, some more than others, and most importantly their languages. German, French, and Italian are probably spoken because Germany, France, and Italy all share large borders with Switzerland (Austria shares a smaller border with Switzerland but hey, you didn't ask about Austria).
As far as movies go in Switzerland, I would say they are most likely filmed in German or French. However, They watch a lot of the same movies we watch here. Some may me dubbed in the aforementioned languages. I watched Dreamgirls whilst visiting in English with no subtitles.
If you are going to Switzerland, Bon Voyage! |
