Frey is supposdly the number 1 chocolate in switzerland...the only reason I know is because my brother brought some home...as well as what is written on the chocolate wrapper. Hope this helps! =)

Frey is very good quality, and found in the Migros grocery stores (at very reasonable prices) -- however, note that they have become available at Target in the US. the Giandor line (in boxes or bar form) is made with almond cream, and incredibly velvety... i haven't seen these at Target, so it might be a good choice if you want something more exotic.

one of my favorites is Cailler, found at the Coop grocery stores. it tends to be darker, richer, and heavier than Frey, so it's the obvious choice if that's more your taste. i've never seen Cailler anywhere else but in Switzerland. the packaging (released relatively recently) is fantastic, particularly the red, translucent boxes of the Ambassador or Frigor line, and make great gifts. Cailler is a little more pricey than Frey, but still cheaper than comparable quality chocolate you can find in the US.

Toblerones are everywhere in the world, so there's no point buying it in Switzerland, unless you're a true fanatic. in that case, you'll be happy to know that Toblerone is really a lot cheaper in Swiss grocery stores than anywhere else, even the duty free shop in the Zurich Airport!

Lindt is also everywhere in the world, but they do release special chocolates just for the Swiss market; one flavor that comes to mind that i've never seen in the US is the Christmas chocolate by Lindt (which has an interesting combination of cinnamon and hazelnut). for gifts abroad, these more exotic flavors would make more sense to bring back.

and honestly, every Swiss city has their own chocolate shops which are popular among the locals. in Zurich, it's Sprungli and Teuscher (the latter has a store in NYC, actually), and other cities have other specialty shops offering very local selections of chocolate, making a good opportunity to sample various flagship products.

Frey
Suchard
Camille Bloch
Lindt
Tobler

These are the only ones that come to mind, but there are more brands available.

Hi
I'm from Switzerland and believe me, it is the first time in my life that I hear someone saying that Frey's are the best chocolates of Switzerland....The best chocolates in Switzerland and in the world are Lindt & Sprüngli(website in the US http://www.lindtusa.com/index.cfm and in for Switzerland but also international http://www.lindt.com) believe me, those are the best one and you will see it by your self when you get to Switzerland. Lindt chocolates own the in the US famous Lindor chocolates. Sprüngli is the Best of the Best and there is Sprüngli's stores even at the airport. By the way....you can also visit the Lind & Sprüngli factory which is in Kilchberg, Zurich and visit a guided tour inside. The Sprüngli has also it's own site(http://www.spruengli.ch).
