Swiss people. Can I use Euro in Switzerland and Liechtenstein? ?

Q.1) The same as the title question.

Q.2) I am going to visit Switzerland with my friend. My friend can speak German, BUT NOT Swiss German. As for me, I can speak English and Italian. Will there be a language barrier for us ?

Q.3) Is English widely spoken in Switzerland?

Q,4) Swiss people. Do you regard Roger Federer as your national hero?

A1) Officially most of Switzerland will not accept the Euro as a currency. However you can change currencies in all Railway stations at a very good rate or in Post Offices. Liechtenstein will accept the Euro seeing that it receives many visitors from Austria but officially its currency is the Swiss Franc

A2) The Swiss Germans are taught Swiss German and "normal" German at school so they will understand you, however your friend may have difficulty with the Swiss German accent but that is uncommon

A3) English is widely spoken in Switzerland to a varying level of ability, the Swiss living in cities are usually those who speak English best but that does not mean that the Swiss in the country do not speak English

A4) We do regard Roger Federer as a hero but not necessarily as our national hero. As Switzerland does not limit herself in competing in Tennis, we have skiing heroes, football (aka Soccer) heroes and sailing heroes. But still I would say that we love Roger - upon his shoulders rest the hopes and dreams of Switzerland!

A5) Staying for one day in Liechtenstein for one day is enough. It is such a small country that a visit of no more than a few hours would suffice.

Hope this had helped,

JPJ

A. 1): Sure you can. However €-notes only, expect the change to be given in Swiss francs.

A. 2): A mixture of English, German and Italian make it a good chance to be understood about anywhere in Switzerland. Just speak slowly and friendly and we Swiss will change to one of your languages.

A. 3): English is taught at schools/universities, NOT spoken on the street. So, refer to what I said in A. 2)

A. 4): Why should we? We don't like heroes over here as they do e.g. in the US. He is just another chap that happens to have a special knowledge. A national hero would have been Henri Dunand, the founder of the Red Cross.

A. 5): One day in Liechtenstein is by far enough. You mainly only visit Vaduz, the country's capital. If, however, you want to drive up to the castle (which can't be visited) or see what's to be seen in the famous paintings collection downtown, then a day would just be fine. Consider not to overnight in the country, next best stop would probably be the Bodensee (lake of Constance) area, Chur or even Zurich.

1. In many places yes, and since you'll get change in Swiss Francs (in Liechtenstein as well), you should be ok in the places that don't take the Euro. You usually won't get as good a rate as you would exchanging your Euros, though.

2. Swiss-German speakers understand German, they just don't necessarily want to speak it. In my experience they WILL speak it if they really want you to understand--except maybe to Germans.
English will serve you well in Zurich, Geneva, and touristy places like St Moritz and Zermatt. Other places are hit-and-miss.
Italian will serve you well in Ticino and Graubunden.
So only in Neuchatel, Jura, and the little mountain towns in the Bas-Valais might you have a problem.

3. I answered that...

4. I'm not actually Swiss, but I would say no, not a hero, but Swiss people have a lot of respect for Roger because he's good at what he does but still comes across as humble.

5. I've lived in Switzerland 7 years and only spent one day in Liechtenstein...but I hear the museum's really good.

A.3) I think the most study English at school

A.4) Sorry I'm not from swiss

A.5) I never was in Liechtenstein but it's... small! I suggest 2 day.
