Hi there,
There are 26 cantons in Switzerland. Cantons are the member-states of the Swiss Confederation. Each canton has its own government, courts and constitution. Cantons are the Swiss equivalent of US States or Candian Provinces.
Cantons are represented in the Swiss Parliament lower house (the National Council) with seats being distributed proportionally in accordance to population (like the House of Representatives in the US). Each canton gets two seats in the Upper House, except for the so-called 'half-cantons' which get one seat each.
There are three cantons which are divided up into 'half-cantons' (Obwalden, Nidwalden ; Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden ; Basel-Stadt , Basel Land), which were divided up as a result of strife between Catholics and Protestants.
