im a student studying abroad from the us in geneva and i am trying to see how to get from the airport to where i wil be staying.. i know bus 8 passes near the place i will be at, i guess taxis are quite expensive though? any recomendations?
Take the bus, it's fairly cheap (a lot cheaper than taking a taxi), reliable and runs frequently and on time.

Take the bus. The number 8 doesn't go to the airport but your ticket allows you to change buses. Without knowing where you want to go I can't help you much more but the 8 does stop at the main station (Cornevin) so you could take any bus from the airport to the station and change there. I think the 5 or the 10 would do (If you take the 10, get off at 22 Cantons and cross to the station)

Geneva airport has (like all Swiss airports!) good ground transportation links. You can get the train into the city directly from the airport, and it's also served by local transportation. The local public transport operator is Unireso, and they have an information desk in the arrivals hall at the airport where I'm sure they'll be able to advise you.
Swiss taxis are very expensive, yes, and in many cases it's faster to take the train into town!

Train,Bus and Tram network is the best in Swiss cities and you can rely on this. but remember - donot travel without ticket or a pass. 80 Franks is the fine for first offence and second time it would be recorded and if you are a foreigner, you may even face consequences.

Every time I have flown into Geneva airport and have travelled by train to the centre of Geneva-(only 10 minutes away) I have got onto the train without a ticket with the intention of buying one when aboard but have never been approached by the conductor so have travelled for free !!!!!
