Travel in switzerland? |
my friend and I are planning to visit Europe somewhere around Mid March to april next year. we will like to start from geneva to Zurich, Milan, and last stop will be Munich of germany. May I know what is the most cheapest to travel? by train? do you think we shall purchase some kind of train pass? we also like to spend some time in some nice villages or moutains in Switzerland on our way to zurich, anyone can help us? is it also crazy to travel in March cos the weather will be very cold, right? By what to do? my friend has not seen snow before :)))))
so sorry, we are the first timer to visit those places, and do not know what is the best way for us..... we just want to rest and relax..... oh yes, we have about 20 days to spend.. is it enough for us? |

i'd go by public transport and since you start in geneve (and are from overseas?) you could get a swiss pass (train pass) which gives you the possibility to use train and bus and ship services everywhere in switzerland so you could really get around.
you will just be at about the peak or end of peakseason (snowseason i mean here) which is not bad, the weather should be good.
from geneva to zurich there is the valais (wallis in german) valley or the bernese oberland which i would recomend. you could give it a try on snowboards or skis or just sledges. most mountain places will still be gearde towards wintersports.
a bit more far of is central switzerland with luzern and acces to mountain villages or grisons (graubünden). far of in switzerland is not that bad. you cann cross the country in four hours so if you really consider getting a train pass you could go wherever you want in switzerland.
also you mentioned milano. it's only an hour from the swiss border and trains are cheap so you could also head for the italian speaking part from geneva and go to zurich later.
taking the train and (post)buses which come with the pass will give you the best scenery specially if you also consider going over passes like the oberalppass on the glacier express that runs from zermatt (where the matterhorn is) to st. moritz in grisons.
so this is some food for thougt, hope it helps..
by the way, switzerland is compared to surounding countries not that expensive anymore. e.g. eating might be but you can always find cheap places and if you are self caterers supermarkets like migros or coop are fairly cheap |

All the places you are planning to visit are quite expensive..so bne warned!!
I strongly suggest that you look into getting a European Rail ticket to cover you on train travels and yes this is the cheapest and best way to see the countries you are visiting, you don't see much at 18,000 feet.
You will find Switzerland and Munich (the richest area of Germany) very clean, friendly and safe. Milan is still very nice but can be a little industrial, remember to have an Italian phrase book when visiting Milan as english is not spoken alot with the Italians.
Twenty days is enough, choose to travel late in the day so you get full days in the places you are visiting. |
