if you can go during March to May, that would be a good time. it can be cold (esp in March), but warm without being hot in May. airfare is quite a bit cheaper then compared to June-Aug (which is tourist season). it'd also be less crammed with tourists, which i like personally. otherwise, Nov-Dec could be a nice time, though depends on what you're looking for (snow? ski? Christmas abroad?)
there's a lot to do in Switzerland. you need to decide what kind of trip you want... is it a sample of everything (then focus on Zurich-Luzern-Bern, Lac Leman area, Zermatt)? an Alpine experience (then Jungfrau area, Andermatt, Zermatt)? museums and culture (then Bern, Zurich, Winterthur, Lausanne/Geneva)? or a leisurely stay by endless, pristine lakes with swans and surrounded by Alpine peaks (look at Brienzersee and Thunersee area, Lac Leman and the little towns perched above)?
for a first-time visit, it may be more "bang for the buck" to try to see as much as possible. in that case, i'd suggest staying in the Zurich area for a view days (with daytrips to Bern, Luzern, Basel; visits Mt Pilatus or Rigi), then move to the Interlaken region for the Jungfrau, then either to Zermatt or Lausanne/Geneva for the its French styled culture. the alternative is to stay in 1 place, where you'll get a better feel and more relaxed pace; for me, i like to book an apartment for the week in one of the Alpine towns. |
