WHAT WOULD BE A NICE AREA TO STAY IN ZURICH FOR A FIRST-TIME TOURIST TO THE CITY?
I WOULD LIKE A REASONABLY PRICED HOTEL THATS ACCESSIBLE TO THE METRO STATION, TOURIST ATTRACTIONS AND SUPERMARKETS.
I agree with Tobster. Hotel Adler is a nice little place. The decor is a bit outdated, but it is clean, reasonably priced and very local.
The other good quality is that is does not have a bar/club on the ground floor like other fair priced hotels.
There is also the Zic Zac hotel, but that does have a bar on the ground floor which is open until 4am and gets quite loud.

We stayed in Old Town so we could walk to the sites and restaurants.

Depends what you mean with reasonably priced. Niederdorf is the old town, 5 minutes from the train station by foot. I personally could recommend Hotel Adler, which is in the heart of old town.
