if you're planning a lot of train travel within switzerland, then Swiss Pass (since it's all-inclusive). if it's just that one leg, then maybe the Half Fare card, though that itself is kinda expensive (i think 99 or 150CHF). you can try bus, but it'll be slow, and you'd have to switch to train anyway eventually since Zermatt is car-free. i definitely don't think it's worth it to try to make the trip in 1 day; the train trip alone is about 4 hours, which means you'd be spending 8 hours on the train. plus, once you get into Zermatt, any of the trains/cable cars (Gornergrat, Sunnega, Rothorn, etc.) will take some time to reach the top as well... at least plan for 40min each way. doing the calculations, you'd be in zermatt for only a couple hours, and you'd be spending quite a lot of money for just that one day. that's not even factoring in bad weather, which unfortunately, is rather common; the Matterhorn is often shrouded by clouds, and it's a waste of money to go see that. my advice is to plan for a few days living in Zermatt; it's a really nice town (peaceful, even, as long as you're not staying right near the train station), and if you have to cut a few days elsewhere from your travel plans, i think the views of Matterhorn is worth it. |

Hitch - hiking would certainly be the cheapest, but could be dangerous. If you went to the airport, and were very lucky, you might be able to find a sympathetic tour operator whom you could catch a ride with. They have coaches going to and fro the airport all the time. |

Try to buy a rail pass before you leave your country. they have great deals that you cannot get in Switzerland. if you are in new York, there is, or was a large Swiss Air office around 52 St on Fifth Avenue. You could get all sorts discount train fare deals. Other than that, click on Railtour Suisse's website and see what they have.

If you are plannign a lot of travel within Switzerland and dont live here, then buy a Swiss pass..there are many variations of it, depending on the number of days you plan to travel and all that. They are valid on all forms of transport, train, boat, cablecar, trams and buses. www.swisstravelsystem.ch
But if you are plannign only to travel to zermatt and back, then buy the ticket from Geneva return.
I would recommend not making it a one day trip, cause Zermatt is very pretty and definitely worth staying overnight at least. Plus the travel time from Geneva to zermatt will itself be 3-4 hours one way, so it will be quite a long day for you.

i would travel by train. it takes a little longer than by car, but you can relax, read a book, sleep, enjoy the view... what ever you like.
