take a boat ride, go to a museum, do some shopping, sightseeing, eat something, there are lots of thing! |

Lucerne is a lovely city surrounded by mountain views. You can visit the Lion Monument, walk along the Reuss River and across the old covered bridges...and take a walk around the 'old town' and up along part of the old wall that once surrounded the city in medieval times.
Also, if the weather permits...a trip up to Mt Pilatus is a must (expensive, but worth it if the weather is fine).
Try and bring along a coat to wear in case of cold weather or a mountain trip. You can wear it on the plane or carry it over your arm.

If the weather is nice, buy the "Golden-Ticket" for a round-trip to Mt. Pilatus. This is an experience you will never forget.
If it's raining, you can still explore the old-town section of the city on foot. There are tons of shops. Also, try the Swiss Transport Museum, the largest in Europe with a planetarium and an IMAX.
I grew up in Lucerne and I wish you a wonderful trip. |

Okay, in Lucerne go take the tram up the mountianside to the Chateau Gutch and have lunch or tea there. It is a very old stone building with great history and some hidden places. The view is awsome as well!
In Lugano, the shopping is fun. Take a walk along the lake, get some gelati and try to find the church with the oldest frescos in Europe. Take a walk along the side streets and visit the little shops. |

Walk around the old town in Lucerne and take note of the architecture, which is fascinating. I took a walk from the old town all the way up the lake to the Swiss transport museum, which has an excellent display of the trains and funiculars used in Switzerland. Then I caught the bus back. You could also catch a boat ride around the lake (in front of the main train station on the bahnhofplatz). There is also the Wagner museum and the Picasso museum.
In Lugano, take in the ambience with a coffee in the Piazza della Riforma then take a walk to the Cattedrale San Lorenzo and admire the rose window and its Renaissance structure.. |

If you're not going to bring clothes for cold weather then go to Lugano, because it won't be too warm in Lucerne. Although there's a lot to see in Lucerne, being at the foot of the alps. What do you want to see: an Italian city (Lugano) or a more German city (Lucerne)? Lucerne, though, is quinticentially Swiss. |
