What are some fun things to do in Zurich, Switzerland?

I am an American living in Zurich, Switzerland. My Wife complains that we never "do anything fun". Ironically, she has lived here her whole life, I have lived here for two years. So, she should really know what there is to do.

I am from New York City. In New York, you don't have to plan things so much because if you go out to buy coffee, usually something funny happens. But Zurich is a really quiet city. So, you really have to seek out activities and plan them.

We have already done the Boat trips of Lake Zurich, Utliberg, the Zoo. So, those are out.

So, what activites can you recommend for me and my wife in Zurich? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the answers. I should have specified that the really challenging part of the question is: I'm looking for fun things to do IN Zurich. My Wife is Swiss, so she has been everywhere and done every day trip. She goes to school and works, so I'm looking for things to do in the city. I myself have been here for a while, and done all the day trips as well. I'm looking for some "Hidden Treasure" in the city. Maybe a really cool museum that is not so well known, a cool place to hear music. Something different. I'm pretty set on the day trips. Nice, but been there. Something IN THE CITY OF ZURICH! - Thanks!

You should come to Toastmasters. There's a Humorous Speech contest next Saturday at the Blue Monkey, as well as 3 English, 2 German and a French club that each meet every two weeks.

Hash House Harriers are supposed to be fun, but I wouldn't know, since it involves exercise. Same goes for the Monday Night Skates.

You can join the Yahoo group Expats-in-Zurich. Sometimes they'll organize dinners out or tram parties.

There's the Lange Nacht der Kursegeschicke coming soon (I think), don't know what that's about.

The Fondue Tram looks like fun, or the Salsa Boats or Blinde Kuh restaurant although I haven't had the pleasure myself. You could go to a hockey game. Wine Boats and Whiskey Ships are both coming up.

OK none of these compare to a New York Minute for sure, but let's face it, you moved here for the big bucks and safe trains not the wild times.

Zurich is a cool place. Lots of fun things to do here. But it really depends on the weather. If the weather is good, I would suggest taking day trips, lots of them. Use the trains. If you dont have a half-price abonament, buy it. They are only Sfr 150 and will reduce the fares of both the trains and the trams.

So, where can you take day trips?
* Luzern (Mt Pilatis)
* Murton/Morat
* Neuchatel
* Rapperswil
* Rheinfalls
* Stein am Rhein
Most of these are within 1-2 hours of Zurich by train.

If you have more time, go to Lugano or Montreux and visit the french and Italian areas of Switzerland. Or go to Zermatt and enjoy this pretty village where cars are not allowed.

Switzerland is a pretty country and there is so much to see and do. You can take many, many trips and never see everything.

Have a look at the link below for several ideas of cool places to go.

If you want more ideas, drop me a note.
