What does it take to be able to work in switzerland for a year? ?

I'm in my final year of college and trying to decide what to do next, i've visited switzerland and really like the country and think i'd like to go there to live and work for a year but i'm really confused as to how i go about this.

I'm an EU Citizen, i'm going to be looking for work in the pharmaceutical industry since that's the area i study in college, thinking of heading to Basel since i know there are a lot of pharmaceutical companies based there.

To live and work there do i need a visa, a work permit, or both?

Do i need to have a job offer before i can apply for a visa? Or do i need a visa before i can apply for a job?

any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are a citizen of France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Norway, Iceland und Liechtenstein you can just travel to Switzerland without a visa for 3 month and look for a job. You have the right to get a work and residence permit if you have found a job and want to stay in Switzerland.

If you are a citizen of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia you can travel visa free to Switzerland for three month and try to find an employer willing to employ you. He then applies for your work permit with the cantonal labour market authority competent for your planned place of work. At this stage a work contract must be presented. Based on the current transitional measures applied by Switzerland the authorities will check that the following conditions are met:
Local worker priority: No local equivalent local worker (Swiss national or foreigner already integrated in to the Swiss labour market) is available to fill the position.
The wage and working conditions must be in line with local and industry standards.
The numerical ceiling, limiting the number of permits available, must not be exhausted.
If these conditions are met, a permit can be given

For Rumania and Bulgaria the same procedures as for the eight countries above are planned to be implemented in 2009.

The link below will provide you with the information you need about working in CH as an EU citizen.
You may also check with your college adviser to see if they have any special contacts that would allow you find work abroad through their resources.
Usually you would find a job first and they will sponsor you for a work visa, but as I said, more info on that you can find by following that link.
Switzerland is a beautiful country to live in. It is perfect for the young and adventurous. So good luck and have fun!
