Basel is awesome! It has a very old city center. It sits at the corner of France, Germany and Swiss. It has a great nightlife. The city center is very walkable. From what I remember, the city is divided into 2 halves, an older and a newer. The Rhine river, I believe, goes right through the center of the city. It's at the foot of the alps, so you won't see any large mountains, but they're not too far away. It's about an hour from Zurich by train, and yes is German speaking, although the swiss have their own dialect. Have fun there.

Basel is great! There's lots to see. It might be hot in August, but you could also be lucky and have some cloudy days, or it could even be cold and rain the whole time!
