hitchhiking, I guess.
I'd recommend the train, though. With careful visits to the toilet you may make it without paying (which isn't even illegal, as long as you aren't on the trains with a yellow eye sticker). There are two trains an hour that go from Geneva to Winterthur. I recommend the one at xx:45 rather than xx:14, takes a nicer route (through Fribourg and Bern).
Edit: Not sure where JPJ gets his tickets, but the normal price for Geneva to Winterthur is 87 CHF (one-way, second class). If you have a half-price pass, it's 43.50. If you're under 25 and have a half-price ticket, you can get the Track 7 pass for 99CHF/year and travel free after 7pm. If you're quick and lucky, you can get a Click-and-Rail ticket from Geneva to Bern or Biel for 28CHF (14 if you have the half-price ticket) and another from Bern or Biel to Zurich for another 28CHF (14 if you have a half-price ticket), and then it's about 12 CHF (about 6 if you have a half-price ticket) from Zurich to Winterthur. (Which I suppose may be what JPJ thought your question was asking!) There are NO fines for not having a ticket on the trains that go all the way from Geneva to Winterthur. You may have to pay a 5 frank or so service charge for buying your ticket on the train. I will happily admit the hiding-in-the-toilet plan isn't likely to work. |

I would take the train. It costs very little (under 20 Francs) and is fast smooth and efficient. I would NOT advise you to take the option offered by some earlier commentators who have suggested fare-dodging the journey.
The thing that they conveniently forget is that if you are caught by the conductor and you have no ticket, you will be forced to pay the cost of your ticket plus a fine of 70 Francs. This applies especially to the so-called "self-control" trains (with a Yellow Eye sticker) which are Regional trains. The "self-control" means that the SBB trusts you to pay for your fare and that if you are caught without a ticket, you will be fined 70 francs plus fare (and if you cannot pay you will need to give some ID, which will be recorded and you will receive the fine in the mail)
Take the train, but don't try and dodge the fare!
See www.rail.ch for timetables and fares for the Swiss Railway network
Hope this helped,
JPJ |
