In 2002, the bilateral agreement on the free movement of persons came into force. This agreement gives European Union (EU) nationals the following rights:

to occupational and geographical mobility in Switzerland;
to equality of working conditions, social security, etc;
to be joined by their families who may engage in gainful employment there;
mutual recognition of diplomas with a view to employment.
The agreement essentially adopts the categories of residence permits as they exist within the EU. These are as follows:

L permits - short-term residence permits (employment contract for less than one year’s duration);
B permits - annual residence permits (employment contract of at least one year’s employment and annual renewal is just a formality);
G permits - cross border commuter permits;
C permits - settlement permits, which are usually granted after five years continual residency.
Currently, Switzerland limits the number of work permits for EU/European Free Trade Association (EFTA) nationals. Until 31 May 2007, EU/EFTA nationals still require a residence and work permit to live and work in Switzerland. For further information contact the Swiss Embassy in the UK.

» Non-EU countries
If you are from a non-EU country, please check with your embassy about regulations for working in Switzerland
