don't know about the special events, but Lausanne is a great city, with lots to do and see. the Cathedrale is a very impressive gothic style church. 2 castles, Chateau d'Ouchy (which is now a hotel/restaurant) and Chateau St Marie (converted to government building); there's no tour inside either of them, but they're interesting to see, architecturally. there's always the lake, which is certainly among the most spectacular in Switzerland. and definitely visit the Olympic Museum; i've seen some of the top-rated museums in the world, and still i found the Musee Olympique to be really well-done... it's interesting, the exhibits have a ultra-modern style, and the whole thing is very interactive for the audience. the old town (Vieille Ville) is nice to walk too; lots of shopping (though not quite so high-end as Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse), street musicians, etc. be prepared to walk though... Lausanne is surprisingly hilly; the old town is basically made up of endless up-and-down cobblestone roads.
