When will Switzerland enter effectively the Schengen area? |
It is said that Switzerland is due to enter the Schengen area sometime in 2008, but at now there are still passport control at the border and holder of the Swiss permit still need a Schengen Visa to travel into Europe. When precisely will this practice abandoned? |

On 5th or 6th December 2008 for land travel and issue of Schengen visa, pending approval by the European Council. For airports it is planned to be implemented in march next year. But don't expect too much. Switzerland joined the Schengen travel agreement but not the European Customs agreement. This means that the borders will still be manned and travelers may be checked for unauthorized items just don't need to show travel documents any more.
Q: When does Switzerland start issuing Schengen-Visa? When will Switzerland start operative Schengen cooperation (SAA)?
A: The Federal Council decision of May 30, 2008, is a confirmation of the council’s intention to begin operative Schengen cooperation possibly still this year, that is possibly on December 5 or 6, 2008. However, this date is subject to approval by the European Council, probably in November 2008. Approval depends on the favorable outcome of the current Schengen evaluation of Switzerland’s performance. If the evaluation is favorable, Swiss diplomatic representations will be authorized to issue Schengen visas from December 5 or 6, 2008. |
