Where to catch the best view of the Swiss Alps? |
I know, people have mentioned it and I have read about it, the best would probably be Jungfrau, Zermatt and Matterhorn, but the fact is that they are rather far from the route I am taking and it would be rather inconvenient for me. So this is my travel plans, could somebody tell me where can I photograph the best possible (and most memorable) picture of the Swiss Alps?
1st day train from basel to Geneva, arriving in Geneva 9am, spend a whole day in Geneva
2nd day early morning train to Montreux, where I will be visiting Cheatteau de Chillion, then afternoon train to Interlaken, where I will be for 4-5 hours. Then late evening train to Luzerne where I will spend a night
3rd day Whole day spent in Luzerne (The city area only)
Amongst these places, where can I catch the best sight of the alps? in the city, for example, or on train journey? |

Unless it's very foggy, you have a beautiful view of the alps over Lake Geneva from the Chateau de Chillon. Same goes for Interlaken and Lucerne. Also, if you're taking the Golden Pass train, you'll have plenty of lovely views and with any luck a good picture. Reserve the Panorama car!
But really I'm not sure why you are sticking to cities (if that is what you mean). You get the best views OF the alps FROM the alps, not from the cities at their bases. You don't have to go all the way up the Jungfrau (in fact it can be disappointing, not to mention expensive, because it's often cloudy) but leave Interlaken and go up to Grindelwald or Kleine Scheidegg.
Likewise, Lucerne is pretty, but Pilatus is spectacular. So is Titlus, although it's not right near Lucerne. You can get a nice view of them from the lake, but again, it's nothing compared to the view FROM them. Rigi is nice too and even closer than Pilatus (unless I'm confused, which happens).
Also, how late is your train to Lucerne? It makes no sense to spend time in Interlaken if it means it's dark while you're actually going through the alps. Interlaken to Lucerne is again, gorgeous.
(If it were me, I'd bypass Geneva entirely, or do a half-day there and a half-day at Chillon.) |

In Interlaken I recommend "Harder Kulm" (see link) since you do not have so much time, you have a great view from up there
In Lucerne you should either go to Mount Rigi, Mount Pilatus or Mount Titlis |

Check with the travel agent that helped book this for you. FYI: Unless the train stops at specific places or moves awfully slow, you'll have a hard time catching good pictures from a moving train without special photo equipment. After talking to a travel agent, if you decide taking the pictures from a train is your best alternative check with a photo shop for the best equipment. This could be a one-time opprotunity, and you don't want to screw it up. |
