All proportional. Salaries are higher in Switzerland than in the US.
Dollar is also very week. (ex.: in 1960's one dollar was worth CHF 4.30, in the 70's down to CHF 3.60, and now about CHF 1.15}
France is more expensive than Switzerland.

The Monk
Things are not so expensive in Switzerland. It's just expensive for people who use dollars.
The U.S. dollar has gone down in value for 2 years or more now. That means that things that cost $1 in Switzerland in 2005 or so now cost $1.50.
Also, in Switzerland, there are more taxes in the U.S. The tax is in the price of the product sometimes and does not show on the receipt. Sometimes, you can get a refund of these taxes when you leave the country, but only if you ask. (They won't volunteer to give it to you).

The only things that are really expensive in Switzerland are real estate and labour. So depending where you buy things and how many people had to work for you to buy it, they may or may not cost a lot.

Because the Swiss Franc is worth more than many foreign currencies so it is expensive to ravel there and buy things.
