The information above is correct, Zurich is not only a city, but also a Kanton. If you know they exact city where they are from, it may help. Also, there is something called "Heimatsort" it is like your city of origin, not necessarily where you live. I grew up in the canton of Zurich, however, my "Heimatsort" is a town in the Canton of Lucerne, and all my records are there (birth cert, marriage cert. etc.)

Zurich is also a "canton" (State), not only a city. You should try the embassy in Washington DC or the consulate in your city, if there is one, and ask how to go about researching families in Switzerland.
