Zurich in 6 hours. any place you recommend? any cafe? anything that one MUST do when in zurich? |
If i were reading this I'd probably think that spending just 6 hours in a place like zurich is an insult.. But as much as i'd like to spend more time, i can't! I don't expect to see the whole of zurich in 6 hours but what i want to see is something beautiful! something that makes zurich zurich.. a couple nice spots by the lake .. where you can sit and eat.. a couple nice cafes maybe..
I'm not interested in museums or church as you find them in any city.. i just want to relax.. I arrive at 13:30 at the main station.. from there i want to go towards the lake side if possible.. can someone also tell me about the transport.. how convenient and expensive it is to get from the station to any place you know by the lake (e.g. Meilen)
Thanks |

What do you want to do: Sightseing or relaxing...?
I don't think it's a wise idea to come to Zurich right now if you want to relax. It's muddy, wet, cold, unfriendly in my home town in March. If you insist to do so anyway: Arriving at the main station, step to your left, follow the river Limmat or go straight ahead through the famous Bahnhofstrasse til you arrive at the lake shore (roughly half an hour). There, ask for the the train station Stadelhofen and take a train to Meilen (12 - 20 minutes ride, 8 Sfr. for a single trip). For details, see here: http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en?OK#focus. The Swiss public transport system is known for its saftey, reliability and cleanliness. For the way back, take the boat (49 minutes to Zurich, same price as for the train), for details see here: http://fahrplan2.fahrplan.zvv.ch/bin/zvv/query.exe/dn?ld=zvv&seqnr=1&ident=i2.0459650.1236365003&OK#focus. Walk back on the left side of river Limmat (look out for "Schipfe"), then climb up to "Lindenhof" (Roman fort - the town was founded by them, then called Turicum) from where you have one of the best views over the town. Bring your notbebook with you - you'll find a free hot spot up there, send us a comment about this travel itinerary. Then step back to the main station which is only a few minutes away.
Mentioning restaurants or cafés doesn't make much sense since I don't know your budget. There are actually plenty of them - let yourself be surprised. If you insist :-): In the "Niederdorf" (amusement quarter just before you start to walk up river Limmat), see "Rheinfelder Bierhalle" - very oldish, unique, with typical Swiss people, try the Jumbo Cordon Bleu. Hmmhhh! (http://www.sengers.ch/izueri/restaurant8/rheinfelderbierhalle/rheinfelderbierhalle.asp). Or further up in the "Oberdorf": "Öpfelchammer" restarant, on the second floor: never been restored since Gottfried Keller, famous Swiss writer, used it in the 19th century. A real must only few tourists visit (sorry, their website is only in German: http://www.oepfelchammer.ch/index.php?page=hauptseite).
I'm sure that this should fill your six hours widely. Enjoy! |

Tomorrow is Saturday and this means the city will be crowded. If you don't like this avoid Bahnhofstrasse (the main street starting in front of the main station).
Take tram No. 4 (direction Bellevue), get out at Bellevue and have a coffee at the historic bar Odeon (Lenin did the same many years ago). If you have not eaten yet, eat at the Kronenhalle, one of the finest restaurants in town (not very cheap though). If you don't have the money for a lunch there, go and have a drink in their bar (with original paintings of Picasso, Rauschenberg etc.), very cozy place. If you like vegetarian food, go to Tibbits, which is just a few meters away from the Opera (which you can see from Bellevue). Tibbits is a very stylish place and the veggie food is the best I have eaten so far.
Walk back to the main station by passing through the old town (starting from the cafe Odeon). |
