a tunnel would be more expensive and would have to be relatively long because the ground on the north and south banks of the river is considerably higher than the river bed. In order to maintain an adequate road gradient for people to use any tunnel would be several kilometres longer on each approach than the river is wide. |

Tunnel. Between Bo'ness and Torryburn.
I'm English, I deliver often to Scotland. If I'm that way, I go north over the Kincardine Bridge and come back south over the Forth Bridge. No toll south on the A60..!
But the scenery coming south over the bridge is spectacular.
I'd hate anything ruining that scene, such as an ugly modern brigde, any more than neccessary.

It would be a tunnel if it was my decision!! If i had my way the forth road bridge would be demolished - let's face it - it's just there for you to view the real Forth Bridge (the rail bridge)
A tunnel would ease the congestion and wouldn't be affected by the Scottish weather! |

I think it'll end up as another bridge. A tunnel will be too disruptive. Mind you, can it be any worse than the extension to the motorway that's being done at the moment??? |

What is the question? Do mean which would I prefer or what have they decided on? If it's the former, then I'd say tunnel - for most of the reasons these other nutters have stated. If it's the latter, then it's going to be another bridge.

In 2004 FETA engaged consulting engineers Faber Maunsell to review and update previous studies into a new Forth crossing from the 1990s, examining the implications of regulatory design changes and updating costs.
The report concluded that, of the eleven bridge and tunnel options considered in the 1990s, only a bridge located immediately to the west of the existing Forth Road Bridge offered:
significant relief to the existing bridge;
enhancement of accessibility to and from Scotland north of the Forth;
a relatively restricted environmental impact;
connections to the existing/proposed road network on the south side of the estuary which would relieve existing communities;
a reasonable construction cost.
In response to public interest in this issue, FETA is now publishing the full report on this website.

Dig a trench, drop a pipe in, back fill the trench, and Bob's your uncle........job done!
Much of the construction work could be based around the dockyard facilities at Rosyth.
If the Yanks can do it in Boston surely we can do it in Scotland......just look at our history. |

Well the tunnel here in glasgow gets congested quite alot and they are always doing works to it which can close it for weeks on end. I think a bridge would be better because there wouldn't be much congestion because the bridge now is congested but the engineers would design it to hold a greater capacity. You can't upgrade a tunnel. |
