IrvCross

A couple who are friends of mine want to walk around the whole coastline of Britain, is this safe?

they are from a quiet village in Norway and don't know about chavs, hoodies and teenage gangs and things like that, so I am wondering if they are likely to meet them, or are they just in towns and cities inland?

Nice idea, but not possible.

There are a number of areas of the coast which are either still used by the armed forces for target practice or are too dangerous because they were formerly used for such activities. Areas such as Shoeburyness, Portmahomack and Dundrennan come to mind.

In addition, there are other areas of coast line which are restricted to military use. The western side of the Rosneath peninsula comes readily to mind (that is where Scotland stores its missiles, etc.)

Finally, there are parts of the coastline which are simply only accessible by boat. This applies to virtually all of the Knoydart peninsula, both shores of Loch Nevis, the Ardnish peninsula, most of Ardnamurchan, most of the shores of Loch Striven, most of the western shore of Loch Long, parts of The Wash, and plenty more besides.

Sorry, nice idea, but not physically possible.

yes its safe. they might meet a snake or a fox . they will not meet any teenage gangs. i wonder, seriously wonder what people think of this country. its not at all dangerous. there are a few isolated cases where someone gets stabbed. usually inner city ,,,,, blacks,. in coastal towns, all is well. safe. dont worry about your friends. they will be fine. i would love to join them. the dorset path is delightful. ive done it. i wish them well

There are a few coastal town that are a bit rough, Southend etc but they're perfectly safe by day.

Chavs don't go to beaches there are no bus shelters or Argos branches there. So yes they will be safe.

I've walked some of the coast (between Poole & Minehead), it's the longest footpath in England.
& it's looong!
(although it's apparently only 630 miles)

It runs round the sparsely occupied (for England) south west corner, so it's mostly clifftops.

Lots of opportunities for wild camping & lots of campsites when you want to have a shower. Lots of the rest of the country won't have the facilities- just urban/ industrial bits.

Had no trouble, but then we weren't anywhere near urban centres.

I'd recommend it- better than traipsing along the infinite flat, oilstained windswept expanse of sand and concrete barriers that is the east coast.

What a wonderful Project!

Obviously planning is going to be paramount on such an undertaking and I would have thought that the concerns you describe would be the least of their worries.

Have the any idea just how many thousands of miles are involved in a true 'Round The Coast Walk'???

Perhaps as a friend you might suggest as a warm up a John 'O' Groats - Lands End trip to whet their appetites.

Such walks being relatively commonplace the will have the advantage of a tried and tested route with accompanying facilities.

Best wishes

Do your fiends realise that to walk the british coastline at a rate of about 20 miles a day will take them about 6 to 7 months and will take them through many towns and cities where you could meet up with anyone you could meet anywhere else in the country.

Yes, perfectly safe - just a little exhausting! It's several thousand miles!!!
I think blisters are more of a threat than hoodies!
