A dumb place to build a castle?

Genuine - Once, whilst standing on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle, I overheard an American tourist comment that it was "a dumb place to build a castle, right next to a railroad".

Any comments?
Additional Details
In response to "TonyB" (would that be TonyBlair?!?!?) no I'm not lying, I heard it myself. Of course, there is a remote possibility that it was said with a hint of irony...

Yeah but nothing in America is over 100 years old, so they don't understand!!

Natalie R
well, if you've been here and visited the castle, you'll know of 'the one o clock gun' (a canon, that fires a salute at, well, you guessed it 1pm, it's basically a loud bang) well, to go along with your story, i once met an american who asked... 'what time does the 1 o clock gun go off at?'. my god, i nearly screamed. talk about adding to a stereotype.

Little C
typical question from americans, I go to the states on hols every year and i think i've been asked at least 10 times 'Scotland - is that near London?' - guess what, the UK has more to it than London, we have rubbish tips older than your country!

poppet
Ah, but I once heard a Yeoman at Tower of London make the same kind of comment there....how it was dumb to build a historical landmark in the flight path of two airports! Genuine!

I've also heard a tourist comment on whether 'the castle was put up for the festival', and also 'where do they put it in the winter'

*cries*

albertan_homegrown
I'll bet that was the same person who asked me if the Canadian Flag came in any other colours. Duh.....

It does not surprise me that an American said that at all,
I once told an American that you couldn't go sailing on Loch Lomond because it had potholes and he believed me,, nuff said !!

Princess Smiley
Edinburgh castle was built in a fantastic location! For purposes of defense against invaders, they can see the Forth and the North sea, as well as Fife.

Also, the castle was built BEFORE the railroad. Does he[the tourist] have no sense of time and history? lol

:-)

Is a joke ? Why don't you told him that the castle existed in 6-th century and the railroad in Edinburgh appear in 18-th ...

Allasse
forgive him his sins - america is but a toddler with no life experience- yet believes that his demands should be met. They have disney castle for fcuks sake - does that not tell you that although they pretend to have civilisation, they have no culture?

redunicorn
I apologize on behalf of America for that stupid tourist. He is obviously from one of those schools that dropped science and history to try to do more remedial reading and math.

If it really happened then it is the typically, stupid comment that could be expected from a person whose countries heritage is 5 minutes old.

scaryclairy
Yup, Americans have no sense of history at all, not one little bit. I also heard on the Royal mile, someone commenting that the building were all sso close together and did they not think about the fact that there was so much space when they were building them. Or even another guy commenting that the city gates being called the worlds end was stupid cos he could clearly see the road on the other side of where the gate used to be. durrrrr

claireyC
dont mean to stereotype but im not that suprised! I mean look who leads the country! Mind you saying that look who leads ours.

Stop mocking the Americans, he had a point. I don't understand why they built a railroad through Nor Loch either.

Not surprised. Like another American (maybe the same one, I dunno) said about Kew Palace:

"It's a pity they had to build it so near the airport"...

I am an American, and that is a representative sample.

Lisa
That I don't know. A dumb place to build a castle would be on quicksand in my opinion.

salem21kat
wow... some people are so stupid! O.o

onapizzadiet
Edinburgh thats in london right? want dumb americans just read yahoo answers there is thousand on there

hustler
not really its stupid to build it on the beach . maybe sum tsunami comes and takes it away

TonyB

NOT genuine. It's a very old joke.

The original joke is that an American said it was stupid to build Windsor castle so close to an airport.

Good try - but you failed.

he'll probably try and buy Edinburgh and ship it to Wyoming or something....
