Most central low-cost hotels or b&b's are pretty rough.. Premier Travel Inn, Travelodges, and St Christopher Inns are options, or online agents like Lastminute.com or the London Hotel Desk.. Though personally I'd recommend staying at the Mitre Pub in Greenwich. It's simple, cheap and you'd be on the doorstep of the Greenwich Christmas market.. plus river/DLR/train to central london.. easy..

Not sure what low cost is these days with the exchange rate and budgets :)

For our October trip I found the following hotels that I would love to stay at, they are all not traditional B&B's where you stay in a host's own home, but you may like them.

Base2Stay
Hoxton

Another tip is to sign up for newsletters from hotel chains like Accor, Best Western, etc. and see what specials they have in their newsletters. Premier Travel Inn has many locations but sometimes their prices are as much as a fancier hotel, sometimes not.

I also included a link to Frommer's Budget Travel On-line with an article on London. When you click the link, read that article and then search for "Secret Hotels of London" on that site.

Have fun on your trip and see my questions about London and Paris, I got a lot of great responses!

Check out hostels, which let out private rooms as well. If you were alone, or in a group would have suggested a dorm. But cos u are a couple, check out some good hostels which have private double rooms too. http://www.globetrotterinns.com/ is one such place.

Else look at travellodge, premier travel Inn, Holiday inn express. You can also check out hotel deals with hotelclub.net

London is an expensive city to stay, so unless you plan it well, it can bite you in the pocket badly. Njoy!!!

try www.hostlewrold.com Ive used it a lot in the past, and its a great site for B&B, camping, hotel etc all over the world. venues are rated by the people that use the site, so you know what you are getting. make sure you check the distance of the B&B from your location though.

finding_elmo
you can always check

www.hostelworld.com OR
www.hostelbooker.com

Stay away from these low cost B&B specially in Paddington.
I've seen a lot of grief in places like this low cost craps when i was working as a guide in London. Advice: Stay in hotels like NOVOTEL in Hammersmith, or similar. 5 more min on the train and a less stressful environment (if you get the picture). I had a friend that went to the hotel and ended-up calling the police. Never got what was sold to her, never got the money back. only got headache and large taxi bill to pay and a spoiled holiday. Don't trust what you see or hear, unless is from a very close friend that have been to the place.
If you saw the picture in the net or a brochure, believe me,...its not what you will see when you get there.
Spend few more bobs and get a descent bed at the end of your day....you'll never regret!!! And your boyfriend will thank you in many ways.
