These days under the mattress or in the care of leprechauns would seem safer than any bank. Bury it in old tobacco tins in the back garden if one must.
Seriously, if I had loads I am not sure of the best bank and would be tempted to deposit in several.
Supposedly the government will protect deposits, but it wouldn't hurt to have money spread round more than one bank. |

Abbey are rubbish, i have been with them for 25 years with no problems until i set up a direct debit, then the trouble started bank charges for this for that, they were charging me for sevices they hadn't provided, they paid me back in the end and as a goodwill gesture put £25 in my account then took that back! i'm changing to another bank they have given me nothing but grief, dont go there! |

Abbey is owned by Spanish bank Santander, which is seen as stable and has been busy expanding recently buying up failing smaller banks.
All UK registered banks are safe, if you have less than £50,000 in there, as this is the new guaranteed amount. This is PER BANK, not per account. It is also PER PERSON, so a joint account is guaranteed up to £100,000.
Moving is not the answer. The answer is to not withdraw money, which will only make matters worse.
But if you have more my advice is buy gold on the bullionvault.com website. You can use money from your bank to buy gold and it will be stored for you in London, New York or Zurich (you choose where.) - When the economy suffers gold prices tend to soar. It is a real tangible asset and it is yours, and it is safe. There is a holding fee on small investments. |

Leave it where it is, if everyone withdraws their money then the bank WILL go under. If you leave it the bank might survive and even if it doesn't, all savings up to £50,000 are guaranteed as safe anyway. |

I don't think anywhere is safe at the moment. But with regard to the Abbey my husband and a friend are both involved with the Abbey at the moment. My friend has been trying to sort out her late brothers money with them for over 12months and my husband has been trying since April to withdraw a bond and still hasn't managed they asked him 4 times to prove his Identity. |
