Sorry - am not answering you - but the woman above. The scream in the night you heard is actually a fox!! The females do this when they are in season! |

As an American, I have no idea (sorry) but I want to take the opportunity to ask what the bloody hell (as you Brits say) is the bird (I assume) I heard when visiting Britain that sounds like a woman screaming. It nearly scared me to death the first time I heard it, which was in the countryside at night. Any idea what I'm referring to? There's nothing I know like it here in the States.
I have heard it subsequently in British costume dramas like Pride & Prejudice and Emma, etc. It sounds exactly like the dying screams of a woman and completely creeps me out.
EDIT: To Emma and Gary...thank you for your answers. I'm surprised; we have foxes here (a family lives on my property in a small cave) but they must be of a different type because I have never heard that sound on this side of the pond. I thought it was a bird all this time...and it's been bugging me for years; I didn't have the opportunity to ask while I was over there. Thanks again.
A fox. Who knew?! |
