Am I Scottish or English?

I was born in and lived in Scotland for 16 years, and moved down to England 5 years ago. Both my parents are English, hence all my family (extended) are English. I will probably live in England for the rest of my life. Am I Scottish or English?
Additional Details
Of course I call myself British, but I just feel that's a bit of a cop-out sometimes!

There is only one thing that determines your nationality and that is which country you are born in. You are therefore scottish, however you can relate to the English culture without difficulty.
Its a pity Rod Stewart can't face up to the fact that he is English!

McHaggis's hubby
Scottish by birth, you should be proud.

Lady Claire of Current Events
You are what you feel, if you still feel Scottish then you are scottish. I was born in England and lived there until I was 7 so I have lived in Scotland for 19 years. I still consider myself english and nothing can change this.

Scottish as that was where you were born, Mary Doll.

Your nationality is usually determined by the country you were born in.
You were born in Scotland, so that makes you Scottish.
But if you want to say you're English, you have an equally valid claim to that too.

Of course, it's all irellevant in your case, because regardless of whether you decideto be Scottish or English, you'll always be British.

As you were born in Scotland your birth would have been registered their so that makes you Scottish

You are in a similar situation to my son who was born in Perth to english parents and we moved to England when he was 8 yrs old.
He is fiercely proud of his country of birth and always supports their teams. He rings to tell me they will 'whip my sorry english ***!' whenever our national teams meet & usually goes very quiet after the event - odd that :-)
Anyway I have always argued that he is english based on the old 2 out of 3 rule (parents and birthplace) but he assures me that now you only need to have been born in a country to qualify to play any sport for its national team.
I dont have absolute proof of that but if it makes him (and you) happy then..... why not?
Call yourself a Scot & be proud. After all I call myself thin & young and get away with it - online anyway :-)
I still love Scotland and go back up when I can.

If you are registered to vote in Scotland, then I suppose come the day Scotland got its independence you would have a right to come live here. Since it would appear however you are registered to vote in England then I would have to say you are most definitely English (nothing to do with your parents, just were you are registered to vote). Of course, if you moved to Scotland again before it got its independence you would then be on the Scottish Voting Roll so would be eligible for Scottish Citizenship then (in that event).

you got it wrong kid, your father was IRISH, he didnt tell you, or your mother........ your in trouble now, his actual name is SEAMUS PATRICK MYLES O TOOLE.. and i am your uncle. forget about the KILTED SCOTS , and the LA DE DA ENGLISH, come back to ERIN,.

Zookeeper
You're Scottish - it's down to where you are born.
I'd be in a right pickle if it was parentage - My mum & all her family were Scottish, my dad was born in S. America as was his mum, but, her parents were English and his dad and all his family were Scottish. I was born in England but moved to Scotland when I was about a year old.
I have always considered myself Scottish but when my hubby laughs at / criticises any English teams I remind him where I was born!!!
Either way, at the end of the day it's who you are as a person that counts - not your nationality.

You are what you feel in you're heart and definately British.

NickyL
you don't have to be one or the other because you were born there or your family come from there you label yourself what you want. Its entirely up to you whether and what you feel like labelling yourself as, english, scottish or british.

Helena
Legally, it doesn't matter, you're British.

Your genes say you're English.

But apart from that, it depends on what country you relate to more, and I'd guess that would be Scotland.

Ask yourself the question.

A scottish footballer steps up to take a penalty that would send them through to the world cup and knock England out.

He shoots, he scores.

Do you cheer or do you cry.

If you Cheer; Scottish, if not English.

In general though If your born their your Scottish. Something you should be very proud of, the Scots are a very proud, intelligent and well respected nation who have for their size created huge impact in the history of the world.

And if your still undecided,

'At the beginning of time, God was discussing the creation of the world with the Angel Gabriel. Leaning back in His golden throne, He told him of His plans for Scotland.
“Gabriel,” said God “I am going to give Scotland towering mountains and magnificent glens resplendent with purple heather. Red deer will roam the countryside, golden eagles will circle in the skies, salmon will leap in the crystal clear rivers and lochs, and the surrounding areas will teem with fish. Agriculture will flourish and there will be a glorious coming together of water with barley to be known as whisky. Coal, oil and gas – all will be there. The Scots will be intelligent, innovative, industrious and …”

“Wait a minute!” interrupted Gabriel. “Are you not being just a wee bit too generous to these Scots?”

But the Almighty replied, “Not really. I haven’t told you who their neighbours are going to be!”’

Cheer, be Scottish, be proud.

I would definitely consider you English. Both of your parents are, so you have it in your genes 100%. Plus, if you're going to live in England the rest of your life, you'll have spent most of your life there, anyway. I'm pretty sure your ethnicity is defined by genetics, and not by where you live.
