American Wanting to Visit UK?

It's my goal to eventually visit the UK. I've come up with a short list of places I would love to visit.. they are London (just for a day or two). Lakes District, York, and the southwest counties of Devon and Cornwall. I was also thinking of hiking in one of the national parks, especially Exmoor. I'm just concerned about how I would be received in the UK, considering the anti-US sentiment in Europe at the moment. Should I wait until things cool off or plan a trip? I've always been a fan of British culture...including literature, music and movies. So I don't see myself as coming as across as loud and arrogant...or at least I hope not.

You will be very welcome!
Dont waste too much time on London though, its not the real UK.
Scotlands a very nice part of the UK (outside of Glasgow!) some of the Scots are a bit up themselves and have a chip on their shoulder about England but apart from that most of them are very nice.
Lake District is good.
Wales - beautiful scenery (people are a little odd sometimes though!)
Yorkshire (my home county) has some very beautiful places.
Shropshire (IronBridge - birth place of the industrial revolution).
Devon & Cornwall beautiful coast lines.
Infact if you stay out of the major cities you will find that most of the UK has some wonderful places to visit and that each area has something different to offer.
I've added the links to the main tourist board sites for you.

You won't have any problem unless you swallow the bait that people will give you in the form of a joke.
We like our repartee and use it to judge someone, see if we can make them lose it.
If you play along and don't get upset you'll be accepted.
You'll only get a bit more of this because your American. We still make the distinction between the US Govt. and the people.
Don't back up America's political position if your drunk late at night in a pub, apart from that you'll be fine.

come to wales mate and sample the real deal, england and scotlands full of girly boys, in wales men are men, and sheep are nervous

Don't take this the wrong way....You will be more than welcome, unfortunately many British people have the impression that Americans are loud and brash and think they are the masters of the world...you seem to agree that this is not the way to behave and you are right....I live in the Lake District and come originally from Yorkshire. You will love the Lake district...lovely scenery, quaint villages, lots of literary connections...and York is very Historic although very rowdy at weekends as it is a mecca for Stag nights, hen nights and students...Try the Yorkshire Dales, Howarth in particular the home of the Bronte's/ The National Railway Museum is in York and the Royal Armouries is in Leeds...Hope you manage to travel and all the best....I have been to the States many times and found it friendly and a great place to visit, hope we can reciprocate...

Only ignorant idiots damn someone purely on the basis of their nationality. It's your horrible government most people don't like - you will be welcome wherever you go. If anyone does have a go at you, walk away - as Peggy Mitchell says in EastEnders, they're not WURFF it!

Ahh, the old stereotype cast rears its ugly head again. English people will welcome any tourist into our country - as long as you are not an immigrant or claiming our taxes, we'll be ok!
England has a lot to offer, but especially Surrey. A county just 20 miles from the centre of London. Alot of the east side is greenbelt protected (Can't build on the land) so you get to see the countryside and Downs in all their glory. Maybe even head to Epsom for the Horse Derby. It outdoes the Kentucky, I think!
London - expensive but worth a gander. Just steer clear of the touts trying to sell you "cheap" box office tickets for theatre productions. Go to the theatre direct or Internet for good deals.
Come over and enjoy our culture!

You will have a great time but might find it a pain trying to visit both ends of the country. 2 days will give you a sample of London and just enough time to be ripped off in one of the most expensive cities on earth.
You will then have to decide which direction you want to go if you fly into London and return home from Manchester it might cut down on the travelling.
You will also need to decide how you are going to get around, as a visitor rail could be good as you will be able to get a Britain shrinker pass.

What ever you decide to do and wherever you go it will be a great experience.

I have dreamt of going to UK since I was 16. Now considerably older and Have gone 3 times in the past 2 years.I found the people a little aloof. Some times rude but never boring.I loved every minute I was there and will go back as many times as I can. Hardest thing I did was leave. Last trip was over Easter. Went to Scotland Sexy Sam was right go to Scotland. Hardest working people I have met in a long time

You will be welcomed with open arms. Come and enjoy yourself.

Don't believe what you read in the press, the British love Americans.

I would recommend hiking in Exmoor, it's such a lovely place with such a range of scenery - from moors to woodland to dramatic coastlines. Dartmoor is also good (and in Devon).
As others have pointed out travelling around such a lot of Britain may be a problem, someone suggested trains; they're worth a try but not always convenient, especially in more rural areas where you may not be able to get where you want, when you want.
I apologise in advance if us Brits appear aloof, we can be a bit reserved at times and tend to find the friendly 'have a nice day' culture of Americans a bit unsettling. But we're nice underneath it all.

Don't come, a special relationships resides only with those in political office people on the street detest Americans.

I dont think the UK is anti-american (im certainly not!) just the rest of europe is anti-american (& anti-uk 2) so i wouldn't worry about that! I would come to Birmingham! Shopping is great, nightlife is good & there are lots of old industrial buildings and stuff if your into that! Also, Stratford-upon-Avon is very historical (shakespeares birthplace!) and the surronding areas like Warwick etc are nice too! Hope that helps!

You'll find its not so much the Brits that are anti US it's those people who think they're doing the world a favour with their P C type attitudes but really do not represent those of us who really are truly patriotic they call themselves British or Brits but they're actually more like a bunch of idiotic Dicks that really haven't got the balls to cause you to much of a problem. A true Englishman welcomes anyone who is friendly and genuine I'm sure you'll meet many decent and inviting people who if they do disagree with anything that may be to do with your country then you'll find yourself involved in an interesting debate about it down the local pub which is normally the way opinions get expressed and how good friends are made, now about your short list of places to visit. To fully take in and get a real sense of all of the areas above you might want to think about buying a place and living here for a year or two, I mean Devon alone has such a massive amount of places to visit even I still have parts to cross off my list of things to do and I've lived here for 40 years, but seriously come and see for yourself I'm sure you'll love it and the people especially towns folk its definitely more English in the rural community's and a bit of a mixture in the city's hope you have a great time.

I sugest that you start in scotland, catch a domestic flight to glasgow, and finnish in london, (if you realy have to go there) you probably wont want to leave scotland when you see it. it's much better then england.
