American girl moving to England?

I aspire to experience living in England for awhile. I'm quite young so what are some other cities other than London that would be a nice place to live in. Can anyone tell me a bit about Brighton? It sounds like a fun place.

My step mom is from London so she'll be taking me on trips before I make any decision to do so.

Thanks much! :)

Why forget the Southeners?

Oxford......The Lake District.........Cornwall......Sussex. Lots to see as well as day trips to London (which I personally detest as a place to live).
as above, do go to Paris for a coupla days its astonishing.. the boat is cheap

Brighton is OK, I guess, but it's a bit...faded. It's a leftover, really, a relic of the era when going on holiday meant a drive to the beach, before cheap flights put Europe within the reach of everyman.

I guess from the tone of your post that you're quite young (early twenties-ish). If you're looking for a vibrant, interesting city, your big three are Manchester, Liverpool or London (or Edinburgh if you're prepared to stretch "England" to "Britain").

"Forget the Southeners" - this is typical of the North/South divide that seperates Britain to this day. All you need to know is that the South has all the money whereas the North is comparatively poor but full of people who would call an ambulance if a car ran you down, rather than tutting and stepping over you.

Have a look at Canterbury, it`s a fantastic city full of history and culture.Great university, lots of cafes, shops and very people friendly. It is also a safe city at night and a short journey to London, France and a central location to all of Kent....

I agree with Jack F that people will say the place they live in is the best, and London is terrible..blah blah. There are a lot of lovely places to live in outside of London, and you can easily go into the city to shop and see a show, eat a meal. It's the best of both worlds. I love the small villages and towns.
You might like Oxford, too. So interesting with all the different University buildings and students from all over the world.
I liked what I experienced of Liverpool, but wasn't there very long, so don't know what it would be like to live there. Great to visit. Maidstone is so pretty---as is all of Kent.
I haven't been to Manchester, Cambridge or Birmingham so can't give an opinion on that.
Brighton is a popular holiday place..but could be expensive to live there because of that.
Visit some places and choose a place where you can be comfortable, and safe, and still have easy access to the city when you want it.

try Newcastle in the North, alot more history and alot more beautiful

Manchester. It is FAR cheaper to live anywhere outside the South East of England.

Manchester has a great night life, excellent city centre shopping and good links to the Trafford Centre about 5 miles away, which is one of the biggest in Europe.

If you like to get out of town, you can visit the Pennines, Saddleworth moor and the Lake District. You can also pop over the Pennines to West Yorkshire.

If you want to visit London, there is a regular train service between Manchester and London, only 200 miles away. Of course Manchester has a large international airport too.

The problem you'll get in Answers is that people will make bad comments without ever going outside of their own city. Most Londoner's have never been outside of London shopping and clubbing and the same can be said of most of the people in the other cities.

You'll get comments from people in London saying that there is nothing worth seeing elsewhere and London is the place to be. You'll get Northern people saying that all Londoner's are rude and arrogant.

One thing is for sure, if you are not staying in London, you must visit it. You should also visit Edinburgh as well. Don't forget popping over to Ireland to go to Dublin.

Try not to be sucked into the usual foreigners mistake of visiting just a capital city, the regions can be far more interesting and fun.

I live in the north near Leeds I'd say you should try and experience all parts of England, London, Brighton, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham are just a few. See which you like the best. All these places are very different and by spending a little bit of time in each one you'll get a feel for them and can see which you prefer.
People are different from all these places as are the cultures.
Good Luck I hope you have great time

go north, forget the southerners,

north has far more history and far less cockneys.

London is for tourists and foriegners, worth visiting for a couple of days, but then its time to leave.

Come to the North of England, I would say the county of Yorkshire is ideal for someone who is visiting the uk for a period of time, Yorkshire is just about slap bang in the middle of the country so access to anywhere else including that suburb of Yorkshire known as lancashire is made easier. Yorkshire is full of history, culture and landscapes to die for. We also offer the best water in the country and the dialect is far easier to understand. As we say in yorkshire "If it's outside Yorkshire, it's not worth seeing".

Squiggles is correct. When i visited there with my famiiy that's what we saw. It was nice, but rainy.

brighton is very diverse (and its only a few hours away from london), and i would say its a nice place to go and visit specially during the brighton festival. its also a good idea to check the web to see what each town/city has to offer.

King Dedede
Manchesters cheap yeah but it's a dump. They get a dirty and tatty tram system and they're comparing the place to London and Barcelona!

Leeds is nicer than Manchester.

Brighton is supposedly the gay capital of England. It's a seaside university town with a pebble beach. House prices and renting ain't cheap. It's just over 2 hours by train to London. Brighton Pavillion is worth a visit. The countryside around Brighton is excellent.
Other towns ... depends on what you're looking for I would say.

If you're a driver Dundee, Telford, Ipswich and Dudley are in the top 5: http://uk.virginmoney.com/newscentre/press-releases/2007/car-friendliest-town-2007.html
Seaside towns are Blackpool, Brighton, Broadstairs, Kinsale, Looe: http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/jul/06/travelnews.beach
Best value students town Plymouth, Cambridge, Dundee, Brighton and Portsmouth are in the top 5:http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/jul/06/travelnews.beach

Also check out Lewes and Maidstone.

I'd say Cardiff or Bristol.. smaller cities, less places to get lost :) much more scenery, near the coast, near mountains, lots of history.
