Ullverston is about 15 minutes away from Windermere and there is a coach trip booking place in Windermere for trips. Grassmere is lovely too

You'll find plenty to do there. Visit Brockhole, take the steamer to Lakeside and look in at the Aquarium. Then you could aways go to Far Sawrey on the other side to see Beatrix Potters place.

Try to fit in a visit to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness... it's only 20 miles away and is a great day out for adults & kids alike. Then it's only a very short hop to Barrow-in-Furness and Walney Island where there's lots to see and do. You can stop off at Ulverston on your way back to Windermere and visit the Laurel & Hardy museum. (Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston.)

I live in South Cumbria so my source is local knowledge.

Kendal is nice. But so is the whole area.

The centre of it all for me is Bowness, has enough there to keep you entertained when the weather is bad (which is 50-50 right now) and a good base to see everything around.

For me, the speed limit on Windermere has killed at lot of what was good about the place in that we can't go water skiing, power boating or similar on the biggest lake in this country.
There are plenty you can only sail on or windsurf but nowhere can you find such a vast expanse of inland water to hold such sports.

I too would recomend the Beatrix Potter museum with all the characters houses to walk around. I loved it and I was 14 when we went last!!

Storm Chaser wannabe!!
There's the World of Beatrix Potter, if you go to Lakeside, there's an aquarium, it also has a boarding location for a cruise on Windermere.

I live only 30 minutes away from Windermere and LOVE going there, it's just so beautiful.
