As a generalisation, the Americans are a fine people. Very open, sincere and generous.
The problem arises abroad because they simply are not aware that other peoples do not necessarily share their world view, whether that is political or cultural. This ignorance of other cultures leads to the usual criticisms: arrogance and stupidity. I personally think this name calling is unjust.
What is the root of this ignorance? A lot of it must be the American media who focus almost exclusively on America and only those issues that involve the US abroad. Another source of it must be the educational system.
Whatever the reasons, only the American people can fix them. |

I'm an American who's lived abroad awhile and there are a couple of things I have noticed. . .seems like we are quick to offer our opinion whether anyone wants to hear it or not, quick to voice dislikes or complaints, and we also talk about ourselves a lot in general. The people I've known from other places don't immediately start telling you about their families, friends, jobs, health problems etc as soon as you meet them. It comes a lot later, if ever.
I'm making a very general statement of course. |

No Dreemer, GWB didn't screw his secretary. But he did invade a foreign nation on a false pretext, invoke some of the most draconian laws to restrict freedom in the history of the US and generally ignore all domestic issues like health and pensions.
It's frightening to think that people like you have the vote!!!! |

If you go back far enough, the whole UK was celtic. It's now a huge melting pot. For example, there's a huge Italian population in Scotland, and a lot of Polish people in Cardiff. Cornwall is awash with rich people from all over. What's your point? |

firstly, george bush was elected by the majority of united states voters that chose to vote in two elections. he was not a dictator that imposed himself on that country. so, the people and the government of the people can be assumed to have some commonality. it's not right to generalise, but there is a greater tendency to insularity, ignorance of other peoples, cultures, histories and yet an assumption of superiority and righteousness in all matters amongst us nationals. this is a dangerous combination when their leaders choose to assume the position of the world's police force and when other nations and cultures try to criticise their customs and actions eg. over foreign policy, human rights ( capital punishment ) and 12,000 needless deaths because of their love and defence of gun ownership. successive us governments and companies have pursued a policy of cultural imperialism displacing traditional national film and entertainment industries, regional food, drink and clothing customs with their bland " global " brands. the world would be absolutely right to resist further progress of this trend toward it's dreadful ultimate conclusion ie. world homogeneity.
having said that, i don't believe that visitors from the united states would be any less welcome in england than in scotland, wales or northern ireland and certainly individuals wouldn't get treated any differently by me than visitors from other countries around the world. |

Errr they think they're better than everyone else?
They think that anything American is vastly superior to anything from any other part of the world.
They know very little about any other country except their own! |

We're expected to be the world's police force, and most of the world either doesn't like it or is too lazy to help; that's what's wrong. |
