Forget the football, forget meadowhall- get out into the peaks where there are loads of empty spaces, animals and paddling, including the open air pool in Hathersage, the plague village of Eyam, and the caves at Castleton.
The city centre has all the shops you need including cinemas, galleries and museums, and Sheffield has fantastic parks and sports facilities like the ice-rink, the ski-village, the Edge climbing centre, and ... where do I stop? |

I agree that Meadowhall would be a great place to go. There are a ton of shops but also other fun things for kids etc. Also, if you are willing to go outside of Sheffield you can try visiting Leeds or York where there a lot of historical things to see. |

Magna is a great industrial museum with lots of interactive stuff for kids and a brilliant adventure playground - it's over towards Rotherham. Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is good if it's open - on Abbeydale Road), or the Kelham Island museum is also quite good for interactive stuff. Quieter option is the Graves Park city farm (Woodseats area) - they currently have Highland cow calves and a lot of other animals - on the opposite side of Graves Park to the farm is a decent little pitch and putt golf course. Ponds Forge in the town centre has a decent swimming pool with water slides. There is an excellent activity playground up by the Ski Village (Hillsborough side of town). Meadowhall is deathly on a hot weekend, and how many kids actually like shopping??? On Sundays, the fire brigade open their museum, and that's worth a visit.
Food wise, try the Vietnamese Noodle Bar on London Road - excellent food and served really quickly - I know how kids hate to wait for their dinner! |

Go to Magna in Rotherham. It's an old steelworks that has been converted into a kids science centre/museum. It's very hands-on and quite good fun. There is also a good play park outside. You could also try the Earth centre in Mexborough I've heard it's good.
In Sheffield itself you can go ice-skating, laser quest, see a film, all of the usual.
The Spanish centre in Broomhall does Salsa classes. Abbeydale industrial hamlet is another good museum. The Ruskin Gallery in the centre is quite interesting.
Sheffield is really close to the Peak District so walking/climbing is abundant if you're into it. I used to go paddling in Burbage Brook- quite a pleasant place to have a picnic. If you start off in the park on Eccleshall Rd you can cycle up through the parks all of the way to the Peaks without going on the roads.
There is also a really good park called Rother Valley Country Park where you can cycle, cable ski (great fun) or just relax. It's between Aston & Wales. |

meadowhall is a good shopping centre (j31 ish), and it had cinemas and bowling alleys in. sutton in ashfield (j28) has an ice skating rink but thats about all. mansfield is a bit run down but has a wicked cinema, theres gala bingo and walkers bingo. also is a big bowling alley there. leeds is a bit further up i think and has stuff there too including football ground and a multi cultural town |

Go to Meadowhall. Apart from the shopping and other paid attractions, there is usually some free attractions / events in the concours in the shopping centre. |
