Are English poeple glad that their country colonized so many parts of the world? |
Is it considered a regrettable aspect of history, or is it a source of pride?
Do English people think that they benefited the people they dominated? Additional Details LeNore: Yes you're right. After the Scots got colonized, anyway! |

I DO still care about the past! it is the most important part in history. britain killed, murdered and used men, woman and even children as slaves because they thought they were above every one else! yes, there is always someone that wants to dominate, like USA now. but we did it in all the wrong ways.
to the person that talks about africa, we used all their raw materials, golds and metals, and made them work for us to. the only reason africa is still underdeveloped is because we (and other european powers) left them in a mess. they have not since been able to gain stability. but it took britain 100's of years to get the political system that we have now, so you cannot expect miracles in 60 years. plus we are still making it difficult for them.
to answer your question, yes some english people feel glad but others feel very bad. |

Eh. Don't you mean British people? Don't forget the Scots. We have had the same royal family for donkeys and provided a hell of a lot of the Navy.
Ask King James the first if you'd like to disagree. |

The British Empire once extended to include half of the world, that is the largest empire to ever exist. The English people are sure proud of their heritage of being once the strongest imperialist. At the time, the British were not at all beneficial to their subjects and they subjugated the natives and forced them to contribute to the wealth of the the British throne. The British might not be as cruel as the Belgians to the natives but they are still manipulative and raised as many Europeans. However, in the long run, people all over the world had benefited from the imperialism.English becomes the official language of the world because the British passed on their culture to the place of occupation which include America, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand...The British imperialists also helped some of the African nations modernize by building roads and modern facilities. |

Yes. British people are glad that the " English speaking peoples" as Churchill called them, include places such as America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. and that much of the world uses political systems based on an elected house of representatives with things like a bill of rights and a constitution as a result. |

To be honest I don't think many Brits care about what happened in the past. We don't really talk about our colonial history (in general)
Yes many bad things happened, but no worse than what the Belgians did in Congo, or the Germans in Namibia, but you have to give some credit to the advancement the British Empire gave these countries. |

sadly the education system in the UK is so bad lots of british people have no idea about the extent of the empire.
if they knew they would understand the atrocities committed in our name were nothing to be proud of. |

yes we are happy about it
it makes it easy for us to visit (and potentially work in) cool countries like usa, australia, NZ, canada, singapore where the first language is english.
it also stopped the french and spanish from taking over the world.

We hate it and are getting pissed off. People don't come to visit our country to see our tolerance. They don't come to see a corner shop selling arab newspapers by a polish shopkeeper.. They don't come to see muslims having tantrums coz we are 'hurting their feelings'. They come to see our history. Our spirit. Not people they can see in another country. A recent survey done by the government shows that the government is ignoring British people compared to immigrants. I.E muslims. And the more our OWN government is ignoring us the more we vote the BNP. And then muslims get upset. Then they suicide bomb us then we go into riots. |
