Good God. So many Brits get this wrong!

England is in Great Britain, which consists of England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is just as it says on the tin.

BUT for all those Brits who have said that GB = UK. WRONG.

England is a nation while Great Britain is an island. The nations of England, Wales, and Scotland are on the island of Great Britain. Those nations along with Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom.

Pip
Shoredud nailed it.
Well done.

Katie F
Listen to shoredude.

The other people are pillocks. No, England is not the same thing. England is one country. Britain is England, Wales and Scotland. The UK, on the other hand, includes Northern Ireland.

If you don't want to piss us all off, try to remember that. I know that, being English, I am probably the least likely to get pissed off than the Welsh/ Scottish/ Northern Irish, but it still does my head in when people call it a "British accent"

patricia b
No! England is in Great Britain, as are Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

dinodino
SHoredude is correct. Northern Ireland is on the island of IRELAND, is not part of Great Britain -- with Northern Ireland included it's the UK (plus a bunch of other little islands, Isle of Wight, Channel Islands etc.)

I should be doing something else

Britain is the island which consists of England, Scotland and Wales.
The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Though Northern Ireland is not part of Britain, people who live there can still choose to identify their nationality as being either British or Irish.

Letty
OMFG LMAO please tell me your not seriously asking this?? do you go to school????

life save the christ!!!

Great Britain is England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

And that's also UK.

And the British Empire includes the commowealth states, and whatever colonies may be left. So, like, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The Falkland Islands, and I think that may be all that's left.

yes-England is like a part of the great Britain. there are other sections too-like wales, Scotland, northern Ireland etc...
England is just a really important province or section that's why its used to refer to the whole country. in general conversation, the two are synonymous but more specifically, England refers to that part or province of Great Britain. however, if you say england, everyone knows that you are most likely speaking about the whole country.
