Are the British smarter than Americans because they read more books or maybe something to do with genes?

The average Brit is probably smarter than the average American because the english are more well-read - I was amazed while in London that nearly everyone read a book while on the tube. However, bear in mind that the best universities in the world are in the states & more of today's scientific research comes out of the US than Brittain. So, in the end, it probably balances out.

Enyo
I don't think that Brits are necessarily smarter than Americans; that is a sweeping generalization. Maybe Brits do read more books, but that does not necessarily equate with intelligence. In addition, many Americans are direct descendants from British people, so their genetic makeup probably isn't particularly different.

What makes you say they're smarter????

Where did you get those facts? I'm American and I bet I'm smarter than a lot of British people.

'More Uglier'?!!!

Maybe - but our grammar is a damn site better if that atrocious phrase is anything to go by!

dame
British just take time to think before they speak, therefore appearing smarter.

A question for a question: what's the criteria for intelligence in the assumption that Brits are smarter than Americans?

You want some figures, check out the OECD's publication "Education at a Glance: OECD Indicators 2005". The US scored higher than the UK in almost all the indicators presented. Don't be fooled by the accent!

AAA
All the Europeans tend to be smarter because in all their continent there is more inclination to the culture

The American 'A' grade is the equivalent to the British 'C'. need i say anymore?

Toutatis
The British are smarter than the Americans because our school systems actually resemble school systems - instead of the glorified daycare system in the US that masquerades as education.

Jesi
Since a great deal of Americans are of british ancestry it can't be the genes, so it must be the books.

On the other hand, if the british were so smart why did they let their empire, that spanned the globe, disentegrate leaving them a polluted little island the size of New Jersey. Not only did they have the whole world to choose from, but they stayed next to France... and built a tunnel to get there faster!!! How bad must England be if they want to go to France?

British are smarter because their education is better, their society is not trashy and because they are real ladies and gentlemen.

They are smarter. Maybe because they are part of Europe and get more exposure to different cultures, lifestyles, ideas....So they don't get tunnelvision.
I think anyone - even americans - would benefit from this type of experience.

I think you're on to something. The Brits have more time to spend in the library because they don't waste any time at the dentists office.
