Being British Question?

Over a number of years in print, broadcast, and online media i have come across articles where British Citizens have stated that they are no longer proud to be British, for numerous reasons.

I am not British, but i believe that you should be proud of your country no matter what, you cant just say you are not proud of being British, because of some news article, about the economy, immigraion, crime etc.
what do you think?

Im proud to be British. Really, there are a lot of British folk who as you said, are not proud anymore. I think the problem is that they don't know how lucky they are. They sit on their backsides complaining about everything but don't ever stop to think how lucky we are...

Here are my reasons for being a proud Brit:

- We have freedom of speech, religion, sexuality etc
- We are very multicultural
- We have free health care - might not be amazing, but it's a darn sight better than many other countries
- Free education
- Good transport network - ok the public transport needs improving and in many places congestion is a problem, but at least we actually have roads which are maintained.
- Amazingly beautiful countryside, so spectacular!
- the weather...most folk complain, but I like the fact it changes all the time, and normally doesn't get too hot or too cold
- the availability of so many different fruit and veg which can grow here
- lots of history, historical buildings etc

I think I have come to these decisions from travelling a lot...I have not yet found anywhere I'd rather be than at home in the UK!

EDIT - hmmm yeah, seems that quite a lot of the narrow minded folk who are not proud have already answered the question! Perhaps they should stop f***ing complaining and try to enjoy life. Seriously...there are far worse places you could be, and far better things that you could be doing than complaining about how the country has gone downhill. Argghhhhh, it makes me so angry!

The problem is the meaning of being British changed, now any one earth gets a British passport, they don't care about our laws, beliefs, culture or heritage. So true British people feel like they dont belong.

I'm proud to live in a country which has the most beautiful countryside in the world, wonderful architecture, and in London in particular such wonderful cultural life. The BBC is the envy of the world, with its 5 national radio stations and 4 television stations catering for every possible taste and interest.
I'm saddened and disgusted by the awful schools, the second rate education system, that for example produces all the people on this site
complaining about 'immigrants'; the poor health care in second rate dirty hospitals that seem to get worse, while endless increases in funding take place, and by the minority of violent, drunk knife
weilding youths, who terrorise so many, particularly in large cities.
the ineffective lieing, corrupt politicians who preside over these ills,
worsen by the month.
But you know bonkers Britain I love you so much and I see that all
our lives are enriched by the people from other lands who work so hard caring for our elderly, cleaning up our messes, operating our transport system and operating all those delicious ethnic restaurants

It really gets me when people bang on about the 'crime, immigration, economy, blahblah'. While no one likes these things, why do some British people seem to think they are the ONLY ones who suffer these maladies?! Americans have had horrific gun crime for years & the way a lot of people were treated after Hurrican Katrina was not great, plus their economy is in rough shape, but Americans for the most part don't go around hanging their heads and mumbling 'Oh, the country is going down the pan, I must move ' etc. They still have pride in the GOOD things, and if we in the UK don't promote the good things and look after them, yes, everything WILL go down the pan!
I was out in Dorset today, the sun was shining, the air was clean, the scenery was great. i didn't see any muggers, knifemen, terrorists, pram pushing 10 yr olds,or hordes of illegal immigrants peeping out of lorries....
I think some folks should read less of the Sun and its ilk, and perhaps look, say, at real world statistics. In real terms, regarding violent crime, the UK is in reality FAR lower than many of the countries Brits think of as being more desirable places to be.

ANGEL: It is run by a SCOT, not a scott.Try to spell properly you ignorant English *****. It may be run by a SCOT, but typically, you english forget 1 thing, if it wasn't for us Scots, you lot would be fucked, seeing as you take all our taxes from oil,whisky,fishing.... And we wonder why you lot don't want Scotland to get independence.you couldn't survive without us....So to answer the original question, no it is **** being British, coz Wales,Scotland,Northern Ireland support the english

I think the idea of 'Britishness' is gone. There never really was a British national identity, in the way there is Canadian or Italian.
However, English, Scotish and Welsh ARE national identitys, identifyable and each unique. These are things to be proud of.

Angel
I am proud to be English, not British,

**** everyone here going on about how we let in illegal immigrants, stealing our jobs etc

Britain is one of the most forward thinking and liberal places in the world, and I for one am proud of that.

All these people saying we welcome anyone and everyone, and let them work here etc need to shut up. If a Polish bloke is willing to work harder than you, then he deserves your job. Maybe you should pull your finger out and get some motivation.

k
'Britain' is made up of 4 seperate countries.

I am English, and I do NOT recognise 'Britain'.

Carter
What's there to be proud of lately? Government is a joke, immigration is out of control, knife and gun crime is rocketing, seriously underage sex problem, the list could go on. So no, I cannot say that I am proud to be British.

I agree with Ello. Im British and not very proud of the fact, for many reason, not because of some negiive news articals, but it doesn't mean anything any more, people that come in from aboard get a passport at the airport, get a house with a car and government payment. British people dont get squot

Stellar Meg
I am British, I now see my country as a foetid pond of the worlds sewer outlet, I have no reason to be proud of that.

I'm english and proud of it its the people who run the country who are letting this once proud nation down (well it is run by a scott) letting anybody in and not deporting all the people who should not be here, then telling us that OUR celebrations are offending them if you don't like them the go back to your own country we won't stop you

camel herder
I feel as a true Brit ie one born here that we should be proud at what our country has achieved to a point but how can we really be proud of our nation as it is today.

IF we ever truly recover from this recession then things will still not be as good as there were five years ago. How come we have experts who seem to predict that we will come out of it. Do they have a crystal ball each.

I lost faith in England with Thatcher and New Labour. The whole country is going down the crapper. The goverment are pushovers. We need a complete change of scenery in parliment. Vote SWP.
