The gun crime problem seems to barely register on the radar anymore to be honest so I wouldn't worry about that.
The city centre and a few of the very urban areas nearby do have their fair share of violent crime but most of the suburbs are actually very pleasant.
You don't say where you will be working so that will be a factor as rush hour traffic across town can be shocking.
South of the river I would go for Wilford, West Bridgford, Radcliffe on Trent etc. The outlying villages are also nice but obviously travelling time is then a factor. Gotham, Bunny, Keyworth are all worth a look.
On the other side of town, Arnold and parts of Carlton are nice. Burton Joyce is pleasant but again you are moving away from Nottingham and travelling time increases.
House prices are cheaper in Derbyshire and the commute is very doable depending on where you choose. Breaston, Borrowash, Risley and Draycott are close to both the A 52 and the M1.
To the North of the county, Ravenshead is very pleasant but perhaps a bit too far from the 'bright lights' of town.
Please get in touch if you need any more help deciding. |

Wollaton is quite nice and suburban. West bridgeford is also quite nice. They are both about a 10 minute drive from the town centre.
Castle Marina and the Park are close to town and are both really nice areas. Castle Marina, as hinted by the name is near a marina and it is mainly apartments. The Park is my favourite, its like a network of roads with lovely houses and flats on it and it's really quiet considering how close to town it is. |

well outside the city - Keyworth is nice. So is Southwell (pronounced Suth-ell), and Lowdham. |

I was born in Nottingham & lived in Nottingham most of my life - I am now at university (not in Nottingham) and am well travelled.
Nottingham is no different to any other city, yes it has its fair share of crime but name me one city that doesn't?
And as for gun crime every week (to the answerer above) get a grip! You clearly need glasses if you've been reading that in the newspapers - or we've been reading different ones?
Back on topic - nice areas in Nottingham:
Redhill in Arnold is very nice & quiet.
West bridgeford is very nice & close to city centre.
The Park & Southwell are also nice as someone else said. Very expensive though and Southwell isn't close to city centre if you need to travel there regularly.
It really depends on what you are looking for.. certain places are very nice but only decent for apartments etc then others are more family friendly, nice areas, ok price, etc.
Some areas I'd recommend for both:
Arnold (Redhill), Rise Park, Hucknall, Southwell, The Park, West Bridgeford, Nuthall etc.
DO NOT even move to forest fields..its awful. |

I lived in Radford last year and forest fields this year. both considered quite rough areas. I've never had a problem. most areas are ok as long as you don't do anything silly. In forest fields we are 15 minute walk from town. 2 mins from asda and 2 mins from a tram stop. I pay £69 a week at the moment. that is student prices though. |

Erm - none. Its the gun capital of the midlands. I live in the East Midlands and we get the Nottingham news here and there is nothing but shootings weekly, I wouldn't live there if you paid me. I'm sure there are nice areas and some nice people but thats irrelevant if there is a gun crime issue. |
