While many people may suggest London, I would like to propose Manchester is the best place to live and work. It is smaller than the capital, but it has almost everything you could wish for, plus it is cheaper than London.
Access is incredibly easy, with regular trains to Liverpool, Birmingham, London and Glasgow, and the M6 is not far, as well as one of the biggest international airports in Britain.
The shopping in Manchester is fantastic. Following the bomb in the City Centre about 15 years ago, everything has been rebuilt and now there are few shops that you find in London but not Manchester. There is also the nearby Trafford Centre, which is home to over 200 stores, and was for a time the largest shopping centre in Europe.
The nightlife, in my opinion, is second to none in the UK. There is a vast range of pubs, bars and clubs, to suit all kinds of tastes. Plus, in almost every place you go into, it will be about half the price of that of a typical London bar!
Manchester is teeming with culture and history, with a number of world-class museums and galleries, as well as being home to a number of legendary musicians and groups, such as Ian Brown (The Stone Roses), and Morrissey (The Smiths).
I hope this answers your question sufficiently!

I love Edinburgh but Bournville, on the outskirts of Birmingham, has been chosen as the best place to live in the U.K. The village is a large garden suburb of 1,000 acres, 7,800 homes and 120 acres of open space. |

Edinburgh - a beautiful city that's not too large although it is expensive. Lots to do and plenty of jobs going. |

I live in a Suffolk hamlet and work mainly within my immediate locality. A significant drop in income compared to the fees that I used to earn in London but much less stress.
Everything is easier out here - driving, parking, security, lack of noise but mainly the absence of people. |
