Best place to live? Liverpool/Warrington/Runc... etc.? |
I am about to move the family up North and have shortlisted the following areas that I can commute to work (Speke): Liverpool (Allerton/Woolton), Runcorn (Norton/Sandymoor), Warrington (Stockton Heath, Appleton).
We currently live in Weybridge/Surrey and it is very quiet and most importantly very safe. We can pay up to 900/month for a large 3-4 bed house with a garden & garage. Where would you recommend we move, if not where would you recommend and why? I want to live within 30-40min drive from Speke. Any help will be much appreciated. Additional Details Thanks for all the replies, its been very helpful!!! So it looks like my budget of 900pcm isn't going to get me a spacious house in Allerton/Woolton...I will try looking along the coast area (Crosby/Waterloo/Blundellsand)...are these areas safe?
I assume the commute from Southport to Speke is a bit too much? |

I work In Woolton, and I promise you if anywhere in this area is like Weybridge it is Woolton/Allerton or Calderstones. Speke is 10 Min's drive away by car at the most.
Calderstones Park is the best park in Liverpool (did you know that Liverpool has more green space than any other city?) but Reynolds park in Woolton won a national award in the past couple of years.
Woolton village has a friendly feel to it, and a short walk out of the village brings you to high sandstone walls with some seriously expensive property behind them.
Have you considered Cressington, thats even closer to Speke. It is an old Victorian area with its own Rail station which gets closed regularly for TV fiming. Three roads lead down to its own prominade on the river front where you can occasionaly see seals from the West Kirby colony basking on the sand banks, and great views of the mountains in North Wales. The New Cressington heath development is close by, but they are still selling houses, and I think these modern built houses are just too small.
OK you probably have the perception about crime and Liverpool. Liverpool is a big city and crime is going to be higher than Weybridge but Liverpool has quite low crime compared to other big cities, and statistically has lower crime than Manchester, Norwich, Lincoln and even Oxford. Statistically Westminster in London has by far the highest crime rate in the UK, but it doesn't seem to deter visitors there. Take sensible precautions just as in any big city and you will be unlucky if you have a problem.
Runcorn and Warrington are all typical Newtown developments with anonymous housing and nothing of character.
Coming from Runcorn you will have to negotiate the Runcorn Widnes Bridge at rush hour, not a pleasant experience, from Warrington the M62 again not a pleasant experience. |

You should probably also give some consideration to parts of Sefton. This takes you out of areas controlled by Liverpool City Council(which is a good thing) and, with the M57/Knowsley Expressway route, you can easily be in Speke within 30 minutes, especially as most of the traffic would be going the other way. You've said you have a family so I'd also say there are rather better schools in the Crosby and Maghull areas (see the details on the BBC website of schools where students achieved 5 good GCSE's). Crosby also has a choice of Independent schools as well as being a coastal area with great beaches (Anthony Gormley's "Iron Men" are here). You are also on a good transit rail network which means you can be in Liverpool city centre in 15-20 minutes. Crosby / Blundellsands is more likely to provide you with the sort of neighbourhood you are used to in Weybridge as it's very much the choice of the local professionals (doctors, lawyers and even some premiership footballers!). Hope this helps and provides you with food for thought. Enjoy Liverpool - it's a great place to be and keeps on getting better! |

Definately Woolton/Allerton, really nice areas, great parks, pubs, schools, people, useful bus routes and shops.
Definatley not Speke! Its full of scallies and smackheads, no joke!
Warringtons way too far away.
And Runcorn is full of weirdos, seriously! |

I wouldn't move to any of the places in your shortlist. With your budget, move further up the coast to Formby. It's a fast journey up the M57 to Speke and a very nice place to live. |

I lived in West Kirby for a while. It was a wonderful place; one rarely heard a Scouse accent and if one felt compelled to visit Liverpool, it was about a 20 minute train journey. |

if you work in speke.. why not live there.?
its on par with most of the other places you mention...
commuting from runcorn, means you have to make the bridge.. and it gets chokka block somtimes..
coming from warrington can be harsh also..
and scousers are wonderful people, you'll like liverpool..
they so down to earth, and helpful... they cant do enough for you... |
