for someone taking a new job in Birmingham, who doesn't like cities, can you tell me a good village or town nearby. Low crime, nice housing, easy commuting etc

Bromsgrove,
Alcester
Alvechurch,
Wythall,
Lickey end,
Stourport,
Warwick,
Studlley,
Tenbury Wells,
Worcester,
Cofton Hackett,
Droitwich,
Upton-upon-Severn,
Stratford-upon Avon.
If ever I was to consider moving back to the Midlands, (which I'm not ) I would probably opt for one of these places. All are within half an hour travelling time of Birmingham, but are pretty, rural, and nicer than Brum!!!

If it is Birmingham, UK then try Solihull, Shirley, Alvechurch or Sutton Coldfield. All have easy access to Birmingham via train services, or car, and are decent areas.

Most of the previous suggestions are good if you have a car (though quite a few can also be reached by train). There are places closer to the city centre which aren't bad...Edgbaston, Moseley, Kings Heath (a little rough around the edges, but likely to be up and coming very soon), Solihull. Bourneville is absolutely gorgeous if not a little touristy (Cadbury factory, etc). Just keep in mind, everyone wants to live in a quaint village with good transport links to a major city, so you will pay out the nose for it.

Shrewsbury Shropshire is a medium size town with good facilities close to the gorgeous South Shropshire Hills (The Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge etc); there are frequent trains from Shrewsbury to Birmingham New Street taking 60 minutes, and other lines from Shrewsbury go to Chester,Manchester,Ludlow and central Wales; through trains to London will commence this May eliminating the current need to change at Crewe or Birmingham.

Maid in Cornwall has made some good suggestions to which I would add the following. But you should remember that the better suburbs can be quite expensive places in which to live. Sutton Coldfield, Solihull, numerous villages around the edge of the city such as Wishaw, Middleton, Alrewas, Shenstone, etc., but these tend to be pricey. Because of the motorway network (M6, M5, M42) and other good main roads(A38, A45, A41,etc.) and also good rail links, it is possible to live quite a way from the city centre and commute in. Personally, I would avoid Tamworth and also Redditch(except the very edges) Places like Wythall and Cofton Hackett are lovely but very pricey. It's really a case of "you pays your money and you takes your choice." I come from a country background and am not too keen on cities but have lived in and around Birmingham since 1960. There are compensations such as the City Symphony Orchestra, Royal Ballet, Symphony Hall, national Indoor Arena and a very lively club scene in the city centre. Also from Birmingham it is easy to get to lovely places for days out. One hour to the Cotswolds, for example.
About an hour and a half to the Peak District. It's not a bad area in which to live.

David S gives good info on Shrewsbury, it`s a good place to be. Telford is a bit closer to Brum, but don`t even consider it.

If Birmingham UK then I would suggest the following: -
Tamworth or Lichfield to the North
Bromsgrove to the South
Telford to the West.

These would be a good starting point for our search.

Depends on how you intend to commute, roads around B,ham UK are very busy at peak times, including motorways,so also affect bus travel.
Follow the rail links out from the centre and check out the stops along the line, eg, running north to Stafford you have Walsall, then Bloxwich, Great Wyrley, Cheslyn Hay, all with an hourly service taking about 40 minutes. All with a good mix of housing, local amenities, etc.

Stourbridge should be OK, it's about 10 miles, lots of nice villages around it too, I've not lived there for 30 years, but from what I can tell it's got even better since then.
