I'm from birmingham too and i don't think i have that strong an accent either but when i go elsewhere in the country people always notice and point it out.
I do think the Brummie accent isn't very nice but it could be worse, we could be yam yams!

MISS ******
You wouldn't think you have an accent because everyone around you speaks the same.

I don't think I have an accent either, but everyone seems to guess where I'm from.

I'd actually love to have an even stronger Welsh accent because we sound fab :))

(I like the Brummie accent too)

Well I'm from near Liverpool, with a "slight" scouse accent and I always get ripped into by people. Especially since I go to college in Wigan...

The best way to tell whether or not you have an accent is to record your voice and then play it back. I'm not a Brummie born but have lived here for over 40 years and friends in my "home" area say I have developed a brummie accent, but I don't notice it. When I first heard my recorded voice (while training to be a teacher) I was horrified by my East Midlands accent. You do not hear your own voice as others hear it as your sound of your voice travels to your brain (which actually hears sounds) by several routes and, put together, what you hear is quite different to how you are heard by others. Anyway, what's wrong with a Brummie accent?

cherry
god I hate hearing back my voice, sound like i got a gob stopper in my mouth and i am black country, but I wouldn't slag the accent because i am loyal to my county

You are wrong! You must have an accent, you just can't hear it!

i dont think anyone thinks they have an accent, when you think about it, everyone has an accent!!

Im a Yorkshire lass,
and i didn't used to have an accent, it used to be really posh, but im starting to get one, and im only posh on the phone >.<
(huge phobia of talking to strangers on the phone too)

i hate having a yorkshire accent, but most people think its brilliant

yes im a brummie too but I dont think I have an accent at all

Champagne suspended a 5th time.
I work in Birmingham a lot and i'm yet to hear an accent like the one it's portrayed as. The Brummie accent is made out to be thick but that's only a select few. I don't really have an accent.Spent 12 years in Australia so may have a very slight Aussie accent but only very slight.

As a Londoner, when I worked in Ny, they loved my accent. But when they said it about a Brummie, and a guy from Newcastle, I figured anything that sound sdifferent from their own must sound cute and "exotic"! Strange really, I think I have no accent, but then I speak like the Queen. I do have to admit, not wanting to offend anyone, but Brummies do tend to sound a bit "thick". Sorry, its just my perception.
