If you fancy a bit of history visit towards the North Sea. There you can find Roman roads, homes dating to the 15oo's and preserved as B&B.s or pubs and even see horse drawn buggies on main roads.
In York you can walk where Constantine walked, hike around the original wall built for the safety of the town, visit the cathedral and see the original gates that kept the city safe.
In Liverpool you can walk where the Beatles walked, go to the wharfs and watch the big ships come and go and have the best fish and chips in original newspaper.
In London you can visit the Tower bridge and take a tour with one of the Beefeaters to learn the history of the place. They live on the premises and have to study for a year before they are allowed to wear the costume that was designed by King Henry the 8th and later replaced (everyday wear) by Queen Victoria because they complained about how uncomfortable it was. They still wear King Henry's for special occasions.
To get to Manchester from Leeds you drive on the highest motorway in England and you across the moors where bodies were discovered to have been buried by a serial killer.
The whole nation watches Dr. Who, footie and listens to Terry on the BBC 2 radio.
Each region has its own dialect and accent and the funniest thing is the Yorkies who use" while" when saying it is half past an hour, example... it is while seven; not it is half seven.
Birmingham hosts the Good Food show each year it seems and some of the greatest chef's attend and cook a demo for those who want to see it.
You can drink a pint outside the pub and not be arrested.
Sixteen year olds can go to work, leave home, join the armed forces, but not drink legally, get married without permission, drive, or buy cigarettes. |

The U.K has some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, and some of the prettiest villages too.;
Port Isaac, Padstow, Boscastle, Tintagel, Polperro, Lands end....all in Cornwall.....Clovelly in North Devon, Dartmouth, Brixham, Torquy, Babbacome, all in south Devon, the Isle of Wight has loads of picturesque villages, and the Lake district and Scotland has some stunning scenery.
Added to that, The U.K. is steeped in history....just take a look at some of the castles and stately homes that have stood for hundreds of years....there are loads of interesting things about this country...far too much to put on this site!! |

Yes, and not widely known either. The National Anthem was written by a man called Dr. John BULL in the 1700's and only became the national anthem through 'common usage', it appears that it has never been 'officially adopted by law in the UK. Also Prince Charles states that the econd verse should be dropped as it is politically incorrect! |

The UK is England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland altogether,
An interesting thing about the UK is that the UK IS NOT UNITED,
Scotland wants independence as does Wales & Northern Ireland, and England could not care less. |
|

Well, said Alberto
 |
Its not such a United Kingdom as it once was. The Scots & Welsh both have their own regional 'parliaments' & the English are getting less pro-UK & more pro-English because they are sick of paying taxes to keep the Scots & Welsh.
There is also the matter of Ulster... & the sooner that goes back to being part of Ireland, the better. |

They drive on the left hand side of the road. They enjoy their tea. They have a monarchy. What else would you like to know? |

The U.K. has a contitutional monarchy government with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State, her husband Prince Phillip, is the Duke of Edinburgh, and her eldest son, Prince Charles, is the Prince of Wales and next in line to the throne.
Gordon Brown is the Prime Minister and head of the U.K. Government in London. There is a Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and National Assemblies in Cardiff and Belfast.
The U.K. drives on the left, which is the same side as the Romans did. We are the only country in Europe to use miles as a measurement of distance. the national speed limit is 70mph with lower speed limits on smaller roads and a 30mph limits in built up areas, 20mph in some places.
The U.K. has 4 Capital Cities, in 4 Contsituant Countries.
London (England and U.K.)
Belfast (Northern Ireland)
Edinburgh (Scotland/Alba)
Cardiff/Caerdydd (Wales/Cymru)
Wales and parts of Scotland speak bilingual in English and Welsh (Wales) and Gaelic (Scotland), which are Celtic languages and have been spoken in these parts longer than English.
The British Isles is an Archipelago of which Britain is the largest island, and is one of 2600 islands, and has been an island since the end of the last Ice Age.
Britain was first settled by the Celts after the Ice Age, then Invaded by the Romans in 43AD, the Southern half anyway, then subsiquent invasions by the Viking, Jutes, Saxons and eventually in the Norman invasion of 1066 of which England was French for a while. Napoleon of France had a crack at invasion in the Napolionic wars and failed, and Hitler had a go in 1940 and also failed. The U.K. joined the European Union in 1973 and a Channel Tunnel was built between England and France and opened in 1994, between Folkstone and Calais.
The British are a peaceful nation, ask any Kraut Serb or Argie!! |
