Can anyone recommend a place in the UK for a summer holiday?

I would like to get away this summer somewhere in the UK - preferrably to a cottage - so somewhere where we could chill out, close to sandy beach, nightlife not essential but stuff to do in the day would be good. Driving is not an issue either :)

I agree with all the Cornwall answers - it took my breath away when I went for the first time - it is absolutely beautiful and it is a great place to go with or without kids and there is soooo much to see and do - you will not be disappointed.

Cornwall is brilliant, especially if you are looking for a beach!

If you want to be in the heart of it all try the lodges at Hartland Forest in Cornwall/Devon. It is about 15 minutes from Bude and most places are within an hours drive. There is loads of places to visit in both counties and this place is sat right on the borders of both.

For something more up country try Yorkshire. There are loads of great cottages dotted about.
Hoseasons have a number for rent in their brochure.

try www.cottages-4u.co.uk They are ok, especially if you go with a few people. Prices range from the time of year you go.

I'd recommend Looe in Cornwall. It's right on the coast. Check out the website below for ideas for cottages. I used to go there quite often as a child and I loved it.

Anywhere in the West country. Cornwall, Devon or Dorset. They all have something to offer whether you want peace and solitude or a lively night life. Dorset is my favourite at the moment. Lovely clean beaches, lots for kids to do, especially on the Jurassic coast. We went fossil hunting and found loads of Ammonites, we didn't want to leave!

It's got to be the Western side of the Lake District, Plenty of accomidation near the beaches and of course the bonus of the beautiful Lakes.
See here for example ;

Since driving is not an issue I think London is best. There is so much nightlife and there are many things to see in the day like Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guards, Madam Tussuad, the Planetarium, the House of Commons, etc. London is great.

i almost don't want to tell you because this place is so special, there are some beach front "lodges" at lusty glaze in Cornwall a bit pricey but phenomenal to wake up to the sun rising over the sea, wow its breathtaking i wish i was there now, have i sold it to you yet?

Brighton - isn't that where everyone who doesn't go to Spain go?

St Ives in Cornwall is very pretty with lovely sandy beach and not too commercialised. Plenty to do within driving distances of about 45 mins such as lands End, flambards theme park in truro, Gweek seal sanctuary near truro.
Not to mention the delicious cream teas!!!!!!
There are some nice caravan parks to choose from. Do a web search for caravan parks in Cornwall.

I have to recommend the Lake District - Windermere is beautiful at any time of the year (even though water skiing is now impossible with the speed restrictions on the lake itself), watersports are still available although they are restricted to the slower versions (kayaking, windsurfing etc.) and there are some lovely, very homely and rustic B&Bs all around the area. I have always been very well looked after and have found the local people friendly and warm and very welcoming to visitors.

Lakes - a sure-fire win!

Try somewhere nice in France. Brittany possibly. It would have less foreigners and be a load cheaper.
