I know this has already be answered but the science museum in kensington it is free to get into and you can also go to the natural history museum its a great day out but do your self a favour and take some food with you as it can be quiet expensive brilliant day out and well worth visiting

Many people have suggested the museums. They are good (and free) - but I am not sure a 5yo would enjoy full day in a museum !

I don't know how tight your budget is, but I would buy a family ticket for the Thames Riverboat cruise. I think for 3 adults and 2 children it would be about £30. You can catch the boat from Westminster Embankment to Greenwich. Once at Greenwich you can look around the market and walk through the Common to the Royal Observatory and the the History of Time exhibition. Kids love standing on the International Date Line and see the world clock marking tme.

On the return journey you can get off at Tower Bridge (the Tower is expensive a £45 for a family ticket) although you can cross the bridge and walk along the South Bank to Hayes Galleria and visit HMS Belfast. Kids under 16 are free although tere is a charge fo adults.

Finally, walk back to Tower Bridge an catch the boat back to Westminster.

I hope this is useful. Enjoy your day.

Natural History & Science Museum...thinks its still free entry !!

Saucy Spider
The Science Museum. The last time we went it was free but you will need to check that out. My son was 7 when we went and we spent all day there, then went back the following week to finish off what we hadn't seen the previous week. It was fantastic.

Natural History Museum
Science Museum
HMS Belfast
Imperial War Museum

All good places which take a day to have a good look around and have some good discounts if you travel by Public Transport into the city (2 for 1 entry and kids cheap)

Or if you want something a little more interesting, how about a river trip along the thames, Greenwich to Westminster. Greenwich has the Prime Meridian centre and the National Maritime Museum, a lovely huge park for picnic, plus you could run them around in the pedestrian tunnel walk under the thames which I found great for My 3 and 5 year old grand kids they loved it. Then onto river boat and up thames, you see the bridges from a new angle. At Westminster, take them up Whitehall, Past the Cenotaph and Downing Street, past the mounted Horse Gaurds and into Traflagar Square.
Then you could either go into Leicester Square behind the National Portrair Gallery, pass the Swiss Cottage Centre (do it on the hour and watch the clock) and into Piccadily. Walk them up Regents Street pass Hamleys for an eye opener to a real toy shop. Into Oxford Street and onto Marble Arch maybe. Loads of things to see and do. Depends how you want to educate and entertain the variety of ages.

If you just want to go out for something simple then take them to the Rainforest Cafe! Kids LOVE it and they have yummy food!

Or there is always the London Dungeons, they tend to love it but the 5 year old might be a bit scared if they are skittish.

And of course the eye is good. You can get deals between Madame Tussauds, the eye and the dungeons I think...

Two must dos for kids in London
1) Science museum. Free entry great place to spend the day (especially if raining). Next door is the Natural History museum with all the dinosaur skeletons!!!

2) Take a trip on the London Eye, wonderful views on a clear day. One of the companies selling tickets for the Eye include a river cruise in the price.
