In 2005, £1 0s 0d from 1955 was worth:
£17.55 using the retail price index
£18.76 using the GDP deflator
£46.12 using average earnings

When my mum worked as a talorist she got paid one shilling and that would have been 1946/47. I worked in 1969 and got paid just under £5 a week. I will look this up for you, but I would say at least a week's wages.

After doing quite a bit of research, it would seem it's value was about £32.12 in today's term.

£1 but allowing for poor phraesology one gallon of petrol cost 4 shillings or 20 pence. Today one gallon costs approx £4.40 therefore equivalence is £22.

It was about a day's wages for the average wage earner.

In 1955. my bus fare to school was one half-penny, ie 1/480th of a Pound. Now the same distance would cost at least £1 for a half-fare. So measured in bus-fares, it would be worth £500.

I used to get one shilling a week pocket money (5 new pence), so if today's kids get one pound, then a 1955 pound would be worth £20 today, but I bet most young kids get more than that.

A house cost about £300 in 1955, so they have gone up by nearly one thousand times.

It all depends what you are spending your money on.

The British currency was decimalised on D Day (Decimal Day), Monday February 15, 1971. Before decimalisation there were 240 old pence in a pound, as opposed to 100 new pence today.

Going by some of these answers the world is full of half brains.
I don`t know the answer but I can give you an idea. It all depends on what you would be buying then. A London underground weekly season ticket from Morden to Bond St, was 6 shillings and 8 pence. or about 37p a 3 mile bus journey 1 and 1/2d, about half a p.
