A very small number of the touristy places in Edinburgh do in fact take Euros but POUNDS is the currency in the UK so take pounds.

So the answer is YES, but DON'T.

Dont get involved in this "scottish pounds/English pounds" issue either. Make sure you have BANK OF ENGLAND pounds because they are a lot less hassle especially if you have to change back afterwards. But avoid the big denominations because like that other guy said, there have been forgeries and some shopkeepers will not accept big denomination notes.

uppercity2009
Only sterling (£).

Most big stores (such as department stores and places like HMV) will accept Euros rather than pounds. Just go to the post office and exchange your currency for free anyway.

NO! because britain is being difficult and wont join the rest of europe with the euro..

The Social Scientist
There are certain places where you can, but only if specified (for example at certain phone booths and the like). Unless there is a clear sign, assume that the £ British Pound Sterling is the only accepted currency.

sarah_roo03
no, you need GB £.
some places may accept them, but on the whole it is the pound.

Little C
no, you have to use pounds

kevspr
IN TOURISM PLACES ONLY LIKE EDINBURGH, CERTAIN PARTS OF GLASGOW TOO, BUT STICK WITH POUNDS AND ENGLISH POUNDS ARE SOMETIMES NOT ACCEPTED AS THERE ARE LOTS OF FAKE ENGLISH NOTES

monkeyface
